Having an issue with my low headlight staying on. They do not switch off when turned off on the steering column. Is the relay bad?, if so where would the relay be on a 2.7l Tacoma. I looked under the hood and nothing. Is the relay inside? I currently have high beams and they turn off. I have the low beam fuses pulled right now. Thanks for your help

Are you sure you don't have day time running lights?

    It's the wife's T4R so it's stock
Pull your neg battery cable to turn them off.

put neg battery cable back on. verify if HLs are on or off.

Make plans to head to dealer on Monday morning.

Keep battery cable off in order to preserve battery.

    Seems like a weird problem.

I was installing foglights and the kit I have is all screwed up. I think it may be a ground issue. My daytime running lights are fine. Its a ground issue or I shorted out the relay to the low beams. As I stated before I had to pull the fuses so the low beams would go out. I was hopping someone might know where the relay is for the low beams so I could check that out.

check the diagram on the bottom of the fuse box lid for the relay location.

So i checked all relays and all relays are fine. I did notice tail lights go out when in the off position but low beams are still on. Could the contacts be bad on the column switch? Just looking for some ideas before i take it to the dealer. Is there any interior relays that would fix this. Whatever it is the switch is not disconnecting the low beam circuit. Also high beams are going on and off as they should. Parking lights work as well.

Could be a bad switch, but I would suspect a sticking relay first. If I recall correctly, there are two relays in the under hood relay/fuse box that control headlights. One is for hi/lo switchover, the other is for on/off. In the past we did have one member here who had a sticky hi/lo relay. He was able to tap it with a screwdriver handle and get it to unstick. I do appliance repairs for a living, and it's very common now to get a sticking relay on home appliances as well. I think that relays and other electronic components are getting cheaper all the time.

This does concern me. Have you disconnected your add-ons yet to see if that corrects the headlight issue?

Yea i disconnected all fog light components. I know the two relays i have checked were marked head and dim. I went to dealer to see if it was the grey headlight relay and it wasnt because i put a new one in and still same result. As far as the dimmer i swapped withthe heater and dim and still same result. Am i missing a relay that could be controlling the low beams?

The column switch sends an input to the body control module, the body control module then activates the headlight relay. The problem could be in either component. There isn't an easy way to test that without a detailed wiring schematic and disassembling the dash for access.

What exactly did you do when trying to install the fog lights? I am wondering if you somehow damaged the body control module.

Edit: Come to think of it, if the 2012 is the same as an 06 and 09, when you turn the lights on and go for a drive, then turn off the ignition and open the door, the lights are supposed to go off, even if the switch is still on. That would lead me to believe a problem in the BCM or a sticky relay, which you have already eliminated. I think you have a failed BCM, question is how did it happen? Most of that stuff is ground switched, I believe, so grounding a wire really shouldn't hurt anything. I'd take it to the dealer if under warranty, don't mention the attempted mod, and hope it gets taken care of without a hassle.
