Want to paint my wheels flat black, any advice?

Well mine weren't that dirty and the sanding cleans them for you. I have done five sets of rims and have never had a problem.

I did not paint the rear of the rim. So the weights did not get painted.

 

It has nothing really to do with dirt.... Its Tire dressings that are bad and are basically silicone based and dont allow paint to stick. But then again, your 22 and youve painted FIVE whole sets of rims! So, I guess you know it all too? Wow-wee!

Ive been painting/doing autobody for over 30 years. Do what you want, I dont give a shit! Im just trying to help a Kid who wants to learn something

So sanding won't take off armor all and similar products? I never knew that. How on earth does regar soap and water accomplish this?

Would you guys just keep your lug nuts chrome? Here's a photo of my rig. You think these wheels would look good in flat black?

 

I would either keep the lugs chrome or buy black ones. If you paint them it will come off after using a socket or iron.

 

dawn or dishsoap has grease cutters in it that strip the petroleum base in armor all tire dressings, wouldn't be a bad step, just be sure to hit the tire with it at some point to cover your bases, only takes a few extra minutes and its good insurance...
not taking sides, but it is a good measure
X2 on buying black lugs, and those rims should look good when you are done, i bet someone has them painted on here somewhere, again good luck bud!

also the cool thing about painting your own rims, is that you can always touch em up, so dont stress, they are just rims and you wont be out a ton of money for the paint

Does anybody use a clear coat after the primer and paint?

 

I didn't because I wanted to make sure touch-ups were easy. Mine have held up well without the clear.

HEY! VERY NICE . btw can i have your tires??? and i know its a dumb question... whether wash or no wash BEFORE you sand.... u do at least rinse them after you sand right? nobody even mentions that when they talk about their "methods"

 

Those tires came on the boys truck...I like 'em but they are loud as hell!

On the wheel painting...I washed 'em up before I started sanding them and then washed and dried them very good after. I used compressed air to blow out all the nooks and crannies so that I wasn't trying to paint water. Water doesn't paint well! Good luck!!

 

Effing pissed. Started raining half way through the first 2 wheels. It's alright tho I guess. All wheels are still black cuz they were already plasti dipped.
