Can I cross water?

Well I did the rear differential breather mod the other day. My question is can I go through water mud? Also the write up for differential breather says it came in through his axle seals?

 

Stop worrying about it, you'll be fine. And if you are that paranoid change the fluid more to see if there is water in there.

How much water we talking about? I've driven several trucks through water above the hubs without any failure. Any deeper than that, I'd start looking to waterproof things.

Don't hit a body of water at speed, that's asking for it. Keep it slow and steady and you shouldn't have a problem, unless you're trying to cross something that would be better traveled by boat.

Do you have 4wd? I ask because one that makes it easier to go through more water and two, you mentioned you did the rear diff breather but you could also raise the front one.

I would also recommend doing the transmission breather, and i think the t-case has a breather.

If you're not going above the doors you don't really need to worry but.... sometimes you go deeper than you wanted to by accident.

Water sucking in through the seals is because of the stock breather, the new one needs to be able to breathe -- in and out -- or you'll create a vacuum (when you drastically change the temperature -- cool water crossing, hot axle) in the housing and it'll suck in from wherever if it can.

So you raise and change the breather so it can free flow -- in and out -- and from a clean dry place.

I'd stay below the bottom of the transfer case if you can.
