Remington 721 in .300 h&h

So, I graduated high school last week, and one of the gifts I was given was a Remington 721 in .300 h&h. One of my father's coworker's husbands (sorry bout that) had the rifle passed to him.. But he's not a shooter nor is his son, so SCORE! Apparently the barrel's chromed as well.

It's in great shape for a 50+ year old rifle, but it hasnt been fired in 20 years..Gonna change that soon though

Was just wondering, has anyone had any experience with the 721 in .300 h&h? Or, how "fun" is a .300 to shoot? I've fired .308s and 30.06's, and am pretty anxious to take this one out... Curious what to expect though.

 

First make sure the rifle is clean. Then look for any cracks around the chamber. If you see any crack then you should prob not shoot it. If no cracks are found then shoot the first one away from your face. If all turnes out well they you got a keeper. Great score. The oldest rifle I shoot is from 1943. The rifle still has the date on it.

the 300 h and h isnt a easy shooter it is bout a 3 shot shooter to your shoulder i have one in 300 h and h it is bout the same age as yours i use it for elk and deer hunting i reload for it i only use bout 110 boattail bullets and it is easyer on your shoulder with the light bullets than the heaver ones. the 300 h and h is the grandfather of all of the new mag's from the 7 mm mag to the 338 mag.




if you dont like the way this gun shots i have a older gun that is in 30 06 that is a jc higgons bellgon made it has scope that is jc higgons and gun case and sling that was original gun dont use it as much as i should.

Good rifle. I would have a gunsmith check it out, tho. There have been problems with some 721s. I don't recall the details, but it has something to do with the rifle going off at the wrong time. I think Remington takes care of any needed repairs.

 

old guns dont go bad if there taken care of i have an old winchester it's a 30-30 that is and octagon barrel that was my dads dads gun that he bought in 1900 and im not affraid to shoot it i take it out when my friends want to shoot and old gun. and my dad carried it deer hunting when we went me and my brother bought him a new bi-cential riffle he killed a have javalina at 200 yards and that was the last time he carried it and we asked him y he didnt have it the next year when we went deer hunting. he said it didnt feel like old betsy. the old timers had a gun that they liked my dad never carried that new riffle again he always grabbed his old winchester that was my step dad my dad carried a 300 savage that he got when i was 3 years old that gun was made in 1928 and i still shoot it when ever i shoot targets so any body that tells you that you have too have a gunsmith look at your gun they dont know wht there talking bout or there city dewllers that have never had too depend on there gun to feed there face i have have been broke more than once and have had to feed off the land.

 

You have a nice old rifle chambered for an interesting cartridge. The Rem 721 rifle came out before the current Rem 700 rifle. so 50 years old is probably about correct.

300 H&H was used for long range target shooting back in the day, but now ammo is a bit hard to find, so look at the larger gun shops, not Walmart. It will make a dandy Elk or Moose rifle, but use it for deer if you like! Recoil is a personal thing, but the 300 H&H offers a a bit less recoil than 300 Win Mag, just hang onto her like you mean it and roll with the recoil and she will make you happy. Enyoy!

 

holy crap, I forgot about this one

I ended up talking with the local gun store owner, he said he'd inspect it for me; I didn't find any cracks or corrosion anywhere on the rifle
He took it, ended up finding a few .300H&H rounds and test fired it for me

then, since nobody in the state still sells .300H&H(that we know of) he loaded me a few dozen rounds (scorex2!)

kick isn't as bad as I thought, just gotta get a new scope, as this one is as old as the rifle and was damaged somewhere along the way

ended up doing this!

Though, IIRC the problems were with the 700's, I'll try see what I can find
