Just remember, it's hunting, not killing. You'll have days that you don't see anything or you don't get a shot. I don't like to hear about people being discouraged from hunting because hey don't get a shot every time they go out.

but remember your first deer is your first. if you want it shoot it, dont listen to others say its small etc.. everybody i personally knows first deer was small. it takes years of hunting to learn enough about the woods to be competent enough to challenge a mature deer. my father doesnt hunt, he hates sittin in the cold, but my grandfather has been my hunting partner for the past 10 years i have learned lots of knowledge from him concerning hunting. good luck.

o and save some money, first one goes on the wall. regardless of how many points he has.;)

I know that, I went out expecting to see something, though not necessarily shoot....Saw one, but couldn't get turned 180 degrees fast enough. Oh well, I have a chance this year again, and I will keep going out whenever I get the chance regardless. I unfortunately won't be able to mount the first because I have no place to put it anywhere. The only thing I may do is mount the antlers (If I dont get a doe...I love deer meat lol).
I already have my cousin threatening to strap them to my winch guard if I get a buck though...I have no doubt that he will do it too

on a side note, I am using the gun and the knife that my dad used when hunting for my first deer, after the first, I am gonna use the hand loads that he did as well.

:proposetoast: my first deer gun was a remington 7400 from my uncle that had passed right before season. his wife gave it to me after the funeral. love that gun, now i hardly ever use it since i bought another fancy rifle.. but i will never get rid of it.

Look into a European pedestal mount. It's the skull an antlers, but on a wooden base that you could sit on an end table or shelf.

I'm actually thinking about about having a knife made with the antler for the handle, But I hadn't heard of the pedestal mount, I will have to look into it

A really nice one around here. I've had a few REALLY nice bucks in the past few years, but they only come around in the middle of the night. Until rut season...there have been 2 big 8s and a monster 10 killed about 1/2 mile from the house in 2 fields. Unfortunately, they're private fields, otherwise i would go hunt them.

One of them was killed when a guy saw it in a field from the highway. Snuck into the field and shot it. I was pretty upset about it. I had been huntin him for about 2 months.

That kinda stuff aggravates the fool out of me. Luckily the places I hunt are fairly secluded or you have to drive by my grandparents house to get too. And not too many unwanted people get down that road without my grandpa slingin some buckshot towards them haha

shoulda called the warden, thats prison time and a fine here, as well as possibly losing his truck and gun. o and you lose hunting privileges for life.

    i hate poachers.

I did. The warden here is actually a good friend of mine. Moved here from Arkansas a couple years ago and is only 25 years old. He coudlnt' prove anything, though. I went to school with the guy's brother and he told him how he killed it, but of course wouldn't admit it to a warden. Haha. Oh well. It sucks, but it happens.
