Just installed a set of wheel spacers... needed them to give me space for tire chains for hunting. For those of you who have used them, do you leave them on? Are there any concerns with leaving them on? Any special things i should know?

I used the blue (removable) thread lock on them and torqued them to 84 foot lbs. Do i need to pull it all apart and re-torque after a few miles of driving?

Sorry for all the questions (and typos) internet is out and i am posting from my mobile device... i will try searching later but for now if someonencould give me a quick replyni would appreciate it!

I dont have them but from everything ive read there isnt really a problem leaving them on. Probably wouldnt hurt to torque them after a while of driving, but hopefully someone with them on will chime in!

Stock wheels right? 1.25 spacers? No worries, just leave them on. Check the torque when you rotate your tires. Mine have not budged in over 2 years and thousands of miles on ranch roads. I used blue loctite and 85 ft lbs as well. I have 1" spacers, run for the same reason. Did you use nuts with extended thread to attach the spacers? You should do that to ensure adequate thread engagement on the wheel studs.

Yep, Stock wheels, spidertrax 1.25" spacers, blue Locktight. These spacers are the ones with the studs pressed in them, so I just used the stock lug nuts (to attach the wheels), and the nuts that came with the spacers (to attach the spacers to the hubs.).. Took it for a drive this afternoon, seem to ride very well. no issues noted so far.

    Thanks!

Look here for a pic of the extended thread lug nuts:
You have to scroll down a bit. You want to use the ones on the right. This is for attaching the spacers to the truck, not the wheels. If your spacers came with standard thread nuts, I would enquire with Spyderco about the longer ones. Aside from providing more strength, they also provide a longer thread for the loctite to grip.

You won't have any trouble with stock wheels and 1.25 spacers. It gets sketchier when you start getting into thick spacers and wide wheels that already have little backspacing. I was behind a Toyota a few days ago that had the wheels almost entirely outside the fenderwell .

After using blue locktight, re-torquing the nuts is just going to break the locktight and render it useless.

Disclaimer, I'm not saying don't re torque them.
I'm just stating what will happen when you do re torque them.

If you just check the torque, the nuts shouldn't move. Once the loctite has set, the amount of torque to move them further should be considerably more. Just put the wrench on at 85 and give it a try. The wrench will click and you move on. If the nuts actually move there's a problem. In that case, yes I would remove the nuts, clean, re-apply loctite and re-torque. That would be unlikely if you installed them right to begin with.

If you put locktite on them, then they wouldn't even worry about them coming loose..that is what you put it on there for. There is a reason I used the red locktite that comes with spidertrax. My friend does have some breaker bars in case of want to take them off so :p

With stock wheels you dont need the extended lug nuts, those are more for aftermarket wheels that have more backspacing. With the spidertrax on you should have the same amount of studs to thread on as you did stock. 2 years on mine no probs

Aluminum is a soft metal. It is possible for it to collapse slightly after the initial install. Thus why it is suggested to re-torque.
85 ft. lbs may be 85 ft. lbs during initial install, but if the aluminum collapses even a 16th of an inch then it's no longer at the proper torque.

What chains did you use?? How did it work?? Tear anything up on the truck??

I may buy a set if it allows room enough for chains on all 4 corners. I have a set of V-Bar chains I used on my old Dodge when I ran 235-85R16 on it.. Now I am putting the same sized tires on my Taco for the winter and would love to be able to run chains in an emergency.

I was wondering the same. I have spidertrax with stock wheels and tires and I want to put chains on the front for elk hunting.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I thought about that.. I will likely not re-torque them, but I will keep an eye on them at tire rotations for sure! I just wanted to know if these are good long term and what everyone's experience is.

I have had them on a few days now, and they seem to handle ok, no major tracking or amplified wheel wobble or anything noticeable so far..

    Thanks

I haven't gone up hunting yet. I wanted to get the wheel spacers on drive them to and from work for a little bit to make sure all is ok before I get on a long haul into nowhere land.. I do have some concerns now that the wheels are pushed out further, if under compression, I will have contact with the wheel well lips. I hope not. But in all I think it *should* be ok I don't plan on doing a lot of wheeling on this trip I will be using the buddies ATV. I will post the results once I get back for sure!

The whole reason I am even going down this road is because last year when I went, the area was dry and no weather in sight. Then that eve, it started to snow and didn't quit until we had almost two feet at camp site. (I didn't have tire chains with me..) so.... I was a bit nervous getting back out. but I have to say the Taco did really well. no issues!

This year I figured I better get a set of chains to avoid my luck from running out.
