I don't see it much different than shows like Jersey Shore, all the moronic "Real Houswives" variations, the juvenile junk on MTV. Or like the greedy buffoons on all the pawn shop and storage locker shows.

People acting incredibly stupid and petty seems to sell and I wouldn't care to have much to do with any of them.

The exceptions would be something like Duck Dynasty or Swamp People, now those are my kind of folks.

It may be "the south" but it isn't the south... Don't care who says so. VA is mid-Atlantic thru and thru... Just ask the NOVA guys...

Same goes for any region in the world. Media skews views, but, then again, we allow ourselves to accept what we see on tv or read in print - saves time in actual/personal experience, which is sad. I rarely watch any tv now b/c in all my travels I've found people aren't as bad as the media likes to categorize these places as.

i forgot to mention the show that represents my neck of the woods; Lizard Lick Towing. tell somebody from out of state you live right down the road from LL, NC and you get all kinds of responses. i was talking to a truck driver from kentucky about a year ago who said he was a huge fan of LLT and when i told him it just a few miles away he was like "AWW MAN! HAVE YOU MET RONNIE??!! HAVE YOU MET RONNIE??! ME AN' MA' WIFE LOVE DAT SHOW!"

It goes back farther than anybody is giving credit. Jerry Springer! They must have sent producers to trailer parks all over the country to recruit guests.

To me it is just a fad. Look where we have been with reality tv shows.

drunk teenagers (real world)> music reality(american idol)> bitchy housewives(housewives of NJ)>gold rush (pick any of the 10 gold shows)> hell I could go on and on, and you could put 10 different types of music reality shows in the slot for Idol. Same goes for all the others. It is just flavor of the week crap basically. Redneck life is flavor of the tv season right now, every cable station has jumped on the bandwagon. By next year it will be some other crap, hopefully reality pron.

Just about every show on True Tv is scripted. They have a disclaimer before the show comes on and their slogan is Actuality not Reality, I can't even watch anything on that channel. A lot of these Networks make big money with the reality shows because there is little cost. Come to think about it Animal Planet has a show called Mud Loving Rednecks what does that have to do with Animals.

I under stand how these shows make some people from the south feel, New Jersey has had it fair share of being exploited by reality TV.

Yes, TruTV is the ultimate worst for supposed "reality tv". TLC isn't far behind in the exploitative wing, though. Animal Planet has been switching it's format over the last 4 years to more character-based shows that include animals (which they'll obviously never get rid of). COPS broke open reality tv with very little cost to make shows, and the first few seasons of any reality show still follow suit. Reality and scripted are merging.

The good thing about "exploiting" areas, like the South, is that money from production flows into those areas, and people get to know/love folks they might not have given the time of day to before. Just looking on the bright side of things...:)
