if they broke half way across wouldn't it have been just as far to go back as it would to continue to their destination?

Normal... almost. Didn't crash at least.
Hydraulic system failure. Someone must have screwed something up during the depot.
Uhh, 8 days worth of travel for a crew of 6. 290k lbs of fuel which equals 43,283 gallons of gas wasted. 2 fighter jets stranded in Goose Bay in Canada, plus those 2 pilots wasted time from work + hotel fees. Plus the amount it will take to travel up to Canada for the team to go fix it as well as the parts to fix it. Then re-task another tanker aircraft to come pick them up and refuel them on the way back to Germany again. Just another day of wasting your hard earned tax payer money...

Well, not quite halfway. We were just past Greenland. And it is easier/more beneficial for them to come back to the mainland than go to Germany.

Hyd system failure and it still flew? Was it a secondary system?

All jets have a secondary system, and emergency systems on top of that just in case. In an older jet's case like mine, a lot of our stuff can still be used with just cables. I think the aircraft industry is hurting itself by going to a fly by wire system. They still have backups, but nothing beats knowing you can operate systems manually if needed.

You know how Boyd was saying the other day his company threw away millions of dollars in product because they were the wrong size? Think about that on a daily basis. In the desert, you would be amazed at the amount of fuel we dump into the arabian pen every day.

Less weight. But they are saving tons of weight just by switching over to the carbon fiber bodies/skin panels and aluminum alloy support structures.
