With the recent surge in reality tv shows, I found myself sometimes watching the Logging, Ice Road trucking, swamp people, and car restoration type shows to get a glimpse of what those careers might be like. They served as a window into a different world that I don't see every day and I hoped to possibly learn something ...

However, I quickly realized that they are often staged and there is not always that much to learn because they end up breaking down into screaming matches and drama fests.

Also, I think many of us watch them and they become confirmation that our lives are not as bad, or that there is someone worse than us.

All that being said, some are entertaining, but generally they play to the ratings and turn into the screaming match/Jerry Springer-like dribble

Pretty sure Grant's army ran Lee and his boys south to a cetain surrender in North Carolina. :D

btw...you do know Richmond was the capital of the Southern Confederacy right?

Speaking of books...you may need to start reading more accurate American History books.

I conceed the mid-Atlantic statement. However, I was speaking historicially.

oh man, my tv show thread has turned into a Civil War discussion.

but yes, i agree with Larry on those statements. Richmond was indeed the confederate capitol for most of, if not all of the actual war IIRC. . . Chris, no need to be ashamed of your Southern heritage in regards to it stemming from Virginia. Robert E. Lee, despite whatever one's historical stance on him during the civil war's era is, was one of the greatest generals in American history.

pretty decent post, sans the cliché and stereotype or two.

btw...I was born & raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I also spent a lot of time in Virginia, DC, Delaware, and the Carolina's. I like the state of Virginia very much...not the large metro areas so much...but the central hills, western country...and of course the coastal lowlands.

Although I have now resided on the Florida Gulf coast for near 25 years...I'll always be a man who loves the Delmarva Peninsula

And...since the conversation has included a geography element...

    I just wanted to note:

Florida...is the only state where you go north, to get to "the south" :D

I hate all these redneck hill billy shows. They have the whole nation thinking all southerners are like that....and it's just not the case. I don't see how anyone can watch that garbage.

Have you ever been to the triangle? Asheville is a relatively rural town and richmond is a metropolitan area, comparing richmond to asheville is like comparing some little town in wisconsin to Atlanta. No shit, there are cultural differences between the two. If you think being from the south means that you don't have command of the english language, and is full of poor, run down towns, then you have no idea what you're talking about and what it means to be from the south. Riding around with a rebel flag and a pick up truck doesn't have anything to do with it.

Anyway, as far as shows depicting southerners, I watch Swamp Loggers, right down the Cape Fear River from me. I actually met them a year or two ago at a barbecue festival and are a really good group of guys. They know shit about barbecue
