hey everyone, I'm posting here because i am joining the marines. i go to meps tuesday for wednesday (Oct. 23-24 2012) i dont have many questions as i have talked to the recruiter for sometime now and i am online everyday for hours looking and researching. i am 19 years of age. i have an idea what to expect due to looking online and also speaking with a buddy that just came back from basic a few weeks ago. my concern is getting physically ready as much as possible. i do not know my job or date for boot camp. what are some work outs i can do at home to do on my own to get more fit. im 5'11" 165 pounds with hardly any fat. i eat all day and still cant gain weight... any tips?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm in the Air Force and in recruiting. The best advice I can give you is build stamina. Longer runs and many reps with lighter weights. Some think that bulking up and being the "strong" guy is key. However, a more agile person with the stamina will be better. I'm sure your recruiter will be having you doing PT before you leave for basic. Follow his lead.

The best advice I can say as far as MEPS goes is don't say anything stupid on the medical floor. In short, don't come up with new illnesses or injuries that you haven't discussed with your recruiter. The MEPS medical folks are "branch neutral" so you won't see Marine nurses, docs, etc... You'll see a "generic" medical staff. All branches use the same medical staff at the MEPS. I'm sure you're recruiter will give you a good briefing.

Good luck and thanks for serving!!

I just saw that you are from Alabama. You'll probably be coming to the Montgomery MEPS. Good luck!!

No need to gain weight, that'll come in time. Just keep jackin up the cardio, as posted above, intensity and high reps. Build that core strength.

Don't gain weight. Run, pull ups, run, pull ups, run, pull ups, that'll get ya through boot camp (which is honestly not that bad. if you go infantry you'll laugh at it later).

Let me know if you go infantry or not, I can tell you anything and everything that will "actually" happen, as opposed to what your recruiter may or may not be telling you. If you pick another MOS, hey, good on you, keep your legs . . .

    ^ do that

I have a pullup, pushup routine that I have been doing for years. Most Marines do it, called pyramid pullups.

Start at 1 pull-up, do 10 pushups, then 2 pull-ups and then 10 pushups and so on until you get to 5. At 5, go back down like below.

    1 pullup 10 pushups
    2 pullups 10 pushups
    3 pullups 10 pushups
    4 pullups 10 pushups
    5 pullups 10 pushups

    5 pullups 10 pushups
    4 pullups 10 pushups
    3 pullups 10 pushups
    2 pullups 10 pushups
    1 pullup 10 pushups

    Max set of pull-ups

That would equal 30 pull-ups and whatever your max is.

If that is easy, add 1 pullup, so start at 2 and turn around at 6.

I started at 1 to 5 (which is the workout I described) when I first joined the Marines 13 years ago. Now I do a max set (25-30), then do 4 to 8 and then another last set. I try to hit twenty on the last set. That puts me around 100 pullups in about 9 minutes.

I wanted to give ya some food for thought. Try choosing a different MOS, while they may make the infantry sound good where you're a trained killer and all, the fact is, your butt will STAY in the field for training. Makes having a normal life with a woman and or kids at home rather hard. Also think about your LONG RANGE GOALS. There are very few job options in the civillian world for trained killers. If you are able to change your MOS now, to get you training that you can use OUTSIDE the Corp, I think that would be your best bet. I speak from experience, I let the MEPS in Little Rock brain fuck me into thinking my MOS would be the coolest thing of building crap and then blowing it up. I was 12 Bravo (Combat Engineer though I heard they changed it a few years ago)

    I just wanted to give ya something to think about. . . . . What happenes AFTER the Marines. . . . . . . .

x2 (except if you're not going infantry then go Air Force)

I'm 80% Disabled, ton of my friends are dead and more have no legs, and I am starting all over in college with no job skills toward a future. I'm not saying I'm not proud to be a Marine, I'm saying it's a reality to think about, like stated above^

I just finished meps, I have not yet picked a mos. What's something else I should look at. I know I would like to get schooling for chemical engineering or something along those lines

Alex! I can't believe you didnt tell me all of this (Or did I just miss you mentioning it) You know I was 8 years in the Marines, right? Congrats man and welcome to The Corps! Semper Fi!

As for which MOS to pick. Everyone has their personal preferences, and you have to realize that your choice will stick with you. Think about what you love to do. Do you like driving? Maybe Motor T would be a choice for you. It would help you getting your CDL in the civilian world. Do you like watching good guys take down bad guys on TV? Maybe then you would like to consider Military Police, where you can pretty much write your own ticket in the civilian world as a peace officer.

Do you see where I am heading with this? Look at the things you love to do. Remember that even though you may or may not make a life-long career in the marines, eventually that time will be up, and the civilian world will be ready for you. Anything that you can learn while in will help you in your future choices. Make a good one and let it help you. Personally I wanted to be a tank crewman. I was lucky enough that they didn't have any current slots available, and I ended up being a tank mechanic. And I LOVE working and fixing things. I learned a TON of things from my time in the Marines. This is something that you will NEVER forget. The Marines are the closest nit people I have ever met. We don't make friends in the Marines, we make life-long brothers. So consider your MOS wisely and think about your future as well as what is right in front of you. I would be more than happy to help you find more information. Welcome to your new family Alex!
