HDR is one thing... tone mapping is what makes the fancy eye candy look tho.

AKA Tone mapping is what ruins the photo.

Im new to this and have done a little research i just dont think i get it...

HDR is where you take 3+ pics of the same photo at different exposures (+,=,-) and merge them.

So is tone mapping the type of edit that adds that stupid white glow around everything?

It can...as with any kind of editing, it can be done to an extreme. The tone mapping when over applied causes halos, yes.

    It can... thats for sure.

I enjoy it to a certain extent. Its hard to do it tastefully. I like using it for the micro contrast options.... similar to dodging and burning, but it saves me a bit of time to use the microcontrast. I like the eye candy... but its my preference and my style. Just like over-using the clarity slider in light room. I love it...lol

Yeah i dont like the halos at all. They make it look pretty stupid 9/10 times. Theres always that one that is actually done well and looks good.

I understand this all a little better now. Thanks guys!

People look at tone mapping as HDR. The truth is, a really good HDR photo won't be obvious.

The halos mean the image has been over-cooked in post.

Back to your question about what it is. We often thing of it as +=- however, you need to look at the complete scene and make a decision about how many images you need to capture the complete dynamic range of the scene. Often, it will take more than three exposures and the range will often be more than a few stops.

had a great night shooting our homecoming game, took about 800+ images or about 32Gb

Also I was given some good advice tonight as far as building my pro kit, has anybody used the Nikon 300mm f4 lens?

I shot my first college game today. Western Carolina versus Appalachian State. Talked to a couple of the photogs, most of them were shooting Nikon. I did look at most of their gear (much better equipped than myself ) but I didn't see anyone with a 300 f/4. I did get this picture though...it looks a little big for a 300.
