Anyway to add a steering stabilizer?

Steering stabilizers (edit: damper sorry) ARE a bandaid for sloppy parts, bad geometry, or poor alignment. They may work to mask your problem but there are other means of FIXing the issues.

Mine doesn't grab every dip, but it does seem to have the very light shimmy in steering wheel around 40 to 53mph??? Any suggestions?

 

get the tires balanced.

We put gear oil in motorcycle steering stabilizers, but that's a different story for another forum.

 

Finally took it back and made it worse. Went to Discount tire and spent another $100.00 for lifetime balance and it was fixed. Texas Truck Works in Magnolia, TX sucks .

 

Am I the only cheapo that does his own alignment using 2x4's and contractors measuring tape ?

 

Dang.... I just put 20wt fork oil in mine! Haven't got to try it out at the track yet though.

Aloha,, just had a lot of fun and giggles reading through this 3 page Thread about adding a Steering Stabilizer to a 2nd Gen Taco...

and with out stepping on any toes or drawing heat my way...

I came across this thread because I’d like to ADD or design one for my 2nd Gen: except by the 3rd reply; the thread went off topic and became a Reality TV show.

So, if I can inquire back to the original Topic: Bump Steer/Stabilizer on a 2nd Gen.

My taco is pretty darn modified and pro built by DMZ for Pre-Running/Baja/Dunes.

on the street: she tracks straight as an arrow and handles turns like a sports car. But...

But, when I’m flying across really rough terrain or messed up deep sand with endless cris crossing ruts ... it would be nice if every little wheel encounter didn’t cause extreme bump steer. (Will I stop driving off road fast if I can’t find one, no).

but I do think one would really help out and or be an amazing bonus to all our other off road mods...So let’s see if We can breath new life into this Thread.

pS- yes, there are Trophy Trucks out there going twice my gate across the desert without a stabilizer... but they also have a beefier proper racing steering rack

 

The issue is the angle of tie rods, not the rack. When lifted and decompressing the tie rods bend down further causing more bump steering. A stronger rack from the Tundra is a good start and there's guys on here that did that, but I believe tie rod angle is the ultimate solution.

I’ve heard about the Tundra Steering Ram switch out,, that might be the way to go (Beefier).
I’ve got the Tundra’s longer Tie Rods on her now (had to for the wider A-Arms and LT suspension)

I’ll have to look into that mod, and if ya have a TW link to a thread that would be great.

on changing the angles, is that possible? And how so?

Here’s some quick pics of my front set up: 3.5 inches wider per side, Total Chaus uppers, Coils n Bypasses, and the Tundra “Tie Rods” for the extension needs

Love to figure out a Beefier steering setup/bump steer minimizer ...

 

Honestly those angles are good, the tundra rack upgrade is the next best thing.
