Never was much for small game. Hunted deer and elk with the fam when I was young. Can't beat some good elk meat, no matter how you prep it. :) Couple coworkers went out this weekend, they just finished up two marsh rats in our shop. Ninja style.

Completed my first Cast and Blast today on the river!

Got a teal and a rainbow trout within an hour of each other. Felt great, only one shot was taken all day and I got one.

    That's awesome!

Ive done a blast and cast - use a fishing pole to retrieve the birds lol... But a trout sounds much better.

I got skunked this morning. Missed a couple mallards at 25 yards right at shooting time, and got backdoored by anything else that flew over.

Damn, good you're seeing some mallards though.
Haha, actually the river was too deep where the duck landed, so I had to use my fly rod to get him :anonymous:

Felt great though, feel like I'm improving a bunch. It's been a blessing of a season for me.

Also got my Ducks Unlimited fleece in today!

Made a rookie mistake this morning. Called in a greenhead and he came to the decoys perfectly.. I was huntched down in the brush and I forgot my safety was on..So I didn't get a shot off. Was a nicely plumed Greenhead too.

That sucks! A rookie mistake is forgetting you didn't throw 3 more shells in after the last volley of birds. Clicking the safety should be instinctual.

3 GWT and doubled on some Gadwall earlier this morning. Was pretty nice considering the lack of weather.

Just picked up a Haydel DR-85 for $9 on sale. Sounds way different than my BG double nasty I got..

I am just getting used to it, got it 30 minutes ago.

I've owned a lot of calls... But I've never been a fan of the Haydels. My personal favorite duck call is Gander Valley's homewrecker. It's 100$ but sounds incredibly ducky.

What's funny about it though is I barley ever call... I'm more of a fan of lots of water movement and minimal calling.

How'd you end up doing Coby? I still havent seen your Alaskan marsh....

I went out yesterday. Managed a teal. Some asshats set up way too close to us and decided to skybust any bird that had a chance of working into the spread. They ended up winging a bird about 50 yards from my blind... They were without a dog and started searching in the tules to find it. After about 20 minutes of them searching, a group of 7 mallard came over, looking hard and responding really well to the calls... I then look over at the fucktards 50 yards away, and even though I'm blowing my fucking call they didnt have the decency to crouch down... One of them even took off his jacket to show off his bright white T shirt in the middle of the marsh, and another one was wearing blue jeans.

I gave them a little courtesy, hoping they would realize the bird was gone and they needed to get back to their spot. Next thing I know 3 mallards are working the marsh really well, looking for a place to land. I start quacking away,, and as the birds come over they flare again off of the guys not taking cover...

I came unloose. I've never seen myself so pissed off but those guys sure got an earfull. They were somewhat new to the game... but what a lack of respect man. I'm spending thousands a year on decoys and gear, waking up at 3am to head out to the public local marsh to get the best spot out there... then these guys waltz on 100 yards away from me 20 minutes before LST. For their sake I hope they don't come back because I'll make sure to reverse the roles.

Anyways, after being pissed off and those guys finally leaving I decided to go hike around in the marsh and hopefully jumpshoot a couple birds on the other end. After hiking around in the mud and nearly getting stuck in quicksand like mud up to my waist I look back 1/4 mile behind me and see a group of 10 or so mallards circle my decoy spread hard, and land on the second loop.... So then we started the long trek back to the pond, crawled as close as we could (which wasn't very close at all...) and managed to smack a hen off the water. A good end to a bad day, but every day out there is a new learning experience.

Now if anyone actually read through that entire rant, here's your reward: the single teal that decided to commit suicide... 15yd shot, full choke.....

    Get some birds boys

there is nothing that pisses me off more than hunters who dont know what they are doing and who have no courtesy for other hunter...unfortunately we have a lease next to some hunters like that and its not like public land....we are actually stuck hunting next to them for the whole season...but anyways good luck with your season bud

The BG DN was my first call. I'm ok with it, but I bought an RNT Alpha 2 this year as my first premium call. Holy cow - what a difference. Way easier to hail call or quack in general. The double nasty takes so much air that I get tired after 10 minutes. The Alpha 2 has more back pressure and takes less air so I can practice for 20 or 30 minutes solid and not feel winded after. Was never sold on expensive calls until now. Going to stand in line for a spot at the marsh on Sat. Can't wait.
