LOL. It's very easy to get so focused on one thing (the lock install) that another (doors lock when closed) is overlooked. No need to admit anything. Nearly all have been there - if not with the lock install, certainly something else. Once spent at least a half hour (abundance of cussing) trying to figure out why a power tool wasn't working, only to then notice I had failed to flip the switch on the power outlet (flipped perhaps a hundred times before).

When all of you refer to a sponge, are you literally referring to one? If so what dimensions and thickness is required? Going to tackle this project on the weekend. Thanks in advance.

A regular dish washing sponge will do.

You could use the "Today Sponge" contraceptive device but a regular sink sponge will do. Plus, the Today Sponge will just get your Pop n Lock excited and cause premature activation. And that's just not good for anyone.

With only 1 screw holding the lock in place, I tried to figure out a way to secure the lock in place. I had a piece of aluminum with sticky tape on the back laying around, I bent it into shape, and then attached it as the pic shows. Prevents the mechanism from moving. Also, still need to attach the sponge to dampen the sound.......

fwiw, I did not have a sponge handy so I used a piece of styrofoam packaging that would have otherwise ended up in the garbage.

Just wanted confirmation that this should apply to a 2013 model before I order it.

I installed mine on my 2013 TRD Sport with no problems. The only thing I did different from the other posters to this thread was I installed commercial grade double sided tape between the mounting plate and the metal of the tailgate. I believe this has helped in keeping the actuator secured in place a little better (although, probably NOT a significant amount) and it also has helped to muffle the sound in the way the others accomplished by installing a sponge between. But, yes, it will work on a 2013 with no problems.

The lock cannot move by manipulating the handle mechanism outside of the tailgate, so there's really no reason for additional mounting hardware, Jeff. If you're worried about that one screw coming out (vibrating loose or whatever), use some threadlocker (like medium strength loctite) on it. Don't use a high strength threadlocker since you'll likely never get the plastic tailgate handle off afterwards without destroying it.

Four months? Good grief. Okay, time for a pep talk. :) It's an easy Saturday or Sunday afternoon install, so get at it, Mark. Just follow the instructions. If you need more, look at the images here. I didn't have those images when I installed mine. Today I'd print them off to have handy. Nearly impossible to mess up with all that available.

There's no change, at least in this, between the 2012 and 2013. Of course, the instructions are in genuine (American) English instead of Canadian, so that might pose a problem.

Great information here. I am about to install one on my new 2013 and plan to route the control wires to the passenger side. Just a quick question; after a casual look under the truck, I did not see any wires running along the right side (i.e. passenger side) of the vehicle. I am wondering if the Pop and Lock wires are ran in the “C” channel of the frame on the vehicle right if the heat of the exhaust system which is ducted on the right side could lead to eventual compromise of the Pop and Lock wires.
    Thanks,
    Scott

I got one from a Goldwing Autocare in Ottawa, a little more expensive $130 after taxes (we get ding with 13% taxes in Ontario), the great thing about it is that they had it in store, now I just need to get my new Taco that will be delivered in late November from the dealership.

I couldn't locate a Canadian dealer either but many would be happy to order it on your behalf at a cost so If you don't want to do the Web ordering and deal with customs, I had a Truck Accessory shop in Alexandria Bay order mine, along with the G4 Elite cover then made a weekend camp trip out of it to get both installed :).
The other choice is to have it sent to one of those US postal places in Odgensburg and drive over for it. 3 hour tour Max.

Really? Crap. I'll have to check them out before purchasing other goodies. Was that $130 for the electric version with backup Cam? If so...then Ouch for me:confused:

Missed your question until now, Scott. Sorry about that. Anyway, feel along the top of the frame. The truck's existing wiring is located there, which is also a good place to run the lock's wiring. That area is well away from the exhaust system. Make sure to leave the plastic sleeve over the lock's wires for protection (the truck's wiring is already well wrapped).

In my case, I simply wrapped the wire ties (some come with the lock) around the existing wiring bundle (by feel), tightening each around the bundle and the lock's wiring.

By the way, welcome to the forum. :)

Thanks, my 2013 has all the wire bundles on the left side of the truck frame. Anyhow, I installed the wiring harness inside the “C” channel on the right side with no problems. After driving today, I carefully felt round the wire route and the heat that the wiring is exposed to did not seem excessive. The further back in the exhaust system should be cooler than next to the engine due to natural heat/energy lost.
