No Oil Change at 5,000 Miles?

Mineral oil I have always changed at 3k-4k miles. Mobil 1 I change at 5k-6k miles. Oil is very cheap insurance to protect your engine. I also will be using either Toyota, Wix, or Napa Gold oil filters.

 

My light comes on at 5K.

 

The Maintenance Required light comes on at 5000 miles since the last reset of the counter. The computer doesn't know or care what type of oil you put into the engine. It is just a mileage counter period. It doesn't monitor the oil in any way. 4 cylinder should be changed every 5,000 miles.

 

What about a six I've always wonder this cant use mile tracker for it cause I use them for other purposes ( trip on tank) & ( daily miles ) it gives me mpg and miles tracking has helped me track repairs like c

 

That is different. Those are trip meters A and B built into the Odometer. We are talking about the Maint Required light thgat you have no control over other than resetting it.

 

For those of you who go the "extra" miles and change oil at 10K or there abouts, do you change to a new filter and top off around 5K? I was just wondering if that was the reason for the Tacomas having the filter neart the top of the engine so that it would be easy to do so and loss of oil would be at a minimum.

I just turned 2200 miles and would like to get the "break in" oil out and get a fresh batch of dino in there. Then at 5K I am planning on going to fully synthetic. I've run Full Syn in several vehicles and swear it is worth every penny...well...untill my 2002 Ford Taurus with 170k miles on it started leaking...traded that bad boy in and bought the Taco..

 

I changed the oil on my truck at 1,000 miles over to syn. And will change it again at 5,000 miles...and each 5,000 mi after. I have Toyoguard Elite (includes 3 oil changes) but the dealer oil jockeys will never see my truck.

The MAINT REQ'D light starts flashing on startup at 4500 miles. It will stay on at 5000 miles if not reset. At least that's how my 2006 2.7L works.

For oil changes, you can safely go more miles on synthetic oil but the MAINT REQ'D light will always behave the same. It needs to be said, if it cannot be proven that the recommended OCI have been followed (5k miles in many cases), dealers will probably not honor the warranty.

I have yet, in my 28 years as an automotive tech, to see an engine fail because a person did not use synthetic oil.

 

Guys..I know there is no such thing as "break in" oil....that is why I put that in quotes...and I never insinuated that the engine will fail by not using sythetics. I just prefer to use it over Dino oil is all and it seems like there are many others in the same camp.

Also my initial question was for those who go 10k between oil changes using synthetics, do they change the filter at 5K or so and then top off? I'm just curious as to what others do is all.

 

That is bullshit and excuse my language but you should change your oil at 3-4,000 miles max because you have fuel which has escaped past the piston rings which has contaminated the oil and as you may or may not know fuel is an excellent oil cutter. If you don't believe me try cleaning up a small spill with fuel. It cleans it right up. 10,000 miles is a crock of crap and they and the rest of the manufacturers should be ashamed of themselves. Their whole maintenance war with each other is crap. That whole sealed for life never change transmission fluid is bullshit too.
