"Question: Is it possible to special-order a new Tacoma with factory chartreuse paint for ANY amount of money extra? I have been told that carmakers will do anything for you if money is no object.'

I will let you know his answer when it comes.

Here is the dealer reply and my reply to that even...

Subject: Your New Vehicle from the Internet Sales Team at Thompson's Toyota in Placerville...

    Hello Jonathan,
It's Cooper, I am one of two Direct Sales Manager's for Thompson's Toyota in Placerville, Ca. In a nut shell, the answer is no. We can have a paintshop repaint the vehicle for you if money is no object then we can get it to a factory level paint job, but you can not get it from the factory. Let us know how we can help.
You can simply reply to this email or call me direct at 530-417-6520 to set an appointment or if you have any questions. If I am not available, or it ends up being on one of my days off...Wednesday or Thursday...please make sure you ask for my partner Tony Biondi. We work as a team so there are no conflicts and one of us is always here.

    Thanks,

    Cooper

In that case, Mr. Cooper, I will probably end up finding a good (very clean) second-hand Toyota truck as a Tacoma (2005 or later), Tundra or even an older T100 4x4 and taking the rig to my favorite body shop on the west coast in California FOR THE SPECIAL CHARTREUSE TREATMENT. I also have a few aftermarket body graphics in mind. I have just heard that factory paint is often inferior to independent shop paint anyway. I will not pay over $15,000 for any used truck from a dealer or private seller (unless, maybe somebody had one in a nice one-off custom solid color for sale as chartreuse, blaze orange or canary yellow). I have also been told to shun aftermarket paint jobs set up by car dealerships.

Most guys won't probably pay a fortune for a brand new truck and another fortune for a mere color change on top of that.

If you ever were to get such a truck in your used truck fleet as I may be interested in, please give me a holler. I am looking at over the coming year for a truck. No immediate hurry.

I want a 4x4 model that is preferably an access cab (or a double cab, maybe) and with factory air (in good working order) as included equipment as I live in HOT Sacramento. I don't really need any fancy luxury items as leather, backup cameras or Bluetooth. I would rather invest in a simple, utilitarian truck with cool paint.

Since I plan aftermarket custom paint anyway, my used truck need not have perfect original paint but the vehicle should be rust-free and premium quality otherwise and with good interior and undented body. I do, however, want a truck with original silver, grey, white or black paint to start with as the inside of the engine compartment will stay the original color and that will go well with my aftermarket paint job.

Thanks for your reply just the same.

Here is chartreuse in the pic below...

I'm betting no. They'd have to stop production to do one custom color. Costing them far more than they'd make. Get a truck and get it painted by a reputable body shop with some high quality paint and clear. It'd be better then the factory paint anyways

    I don't think they'll do it.
You MIGHT be able to get a non-standard color that is used on another vehicle made on the same production line, but unlikely they will bring in a paint from another factory.

The very idea of a production line and mass production makes this extremely unlikely. It's not like Harley where they have a custom shop. They start the line and make ## red trucks, then ## white trucks, then ## DSM, etc....

they definitely wouldnt do it on the line at the "factory" for any reasonable amount of money. Now, your dealer may do it in house for the right price. Esp if they are into lifting trucks and doing custom "non factory" upgrades

    Here's my guesses:

If your dealer has an in-house body shop, they will charge you X dollars for the custom colour, and if you insist on factory paint, they will likely tell you it is, even if they spray it on.

If your dealer doesn't have an in-house body shop, they will charge you X dollars + Y markup of roughly 25-30% for the custom colour, and if you insist on factory paint, they will likely tell you it is, even if the sublet body shop sprays it on.

And telling a sales manager (assuming thats who you emailed) that money is no object isn't going to do much for your deal.

I'd be getting a reputable shop to do the custom paint if its that important to you, as said, the factory water based paint is definitly lacking in the durability department.

A man I knew once told me this. This guy's an old Irish-Catholic fellow, a San Francisco boy whose father was a city cop, I know who grew up in the muscle-car era and believes the 1960's are the standard for automobile production excellence, value and customer service. Back in the days of of Mopar Hemi 426 muscle, genuine factory custom paint was the norm as well as special motors, racing stripes and transmissions.

On second thoughts, I probably should get a good pre-owned Tacoma then for any aftermarket custom paint work.

Black, white or silver should work best for a chartreuse makeover since the engine compartment is likely to retain the original color.

From the factory? Seriously doubtful. But as soon as they see "ANY amount of money", they'll offer to do it at their body shop.

I'm an old Irish-Catholic fellow who grew up in the 1960's...and I remember the muscle car era of the 1960's & early '70's quite well...

there were quite a number of motors...transmitions...rear ends gears...other runnig gear and suspension set-ups...paint options...interior options...stripes and other graphics...offered by the big three during the muscle car wars...

but most were RPO's and I recall no offerings from Detroit of custom paint jobs.

I do recall some of the large (huge) dealerships building off the shelf race (pony) cars in decent numbers. (google COPO or Yenko for example)

It is real cool to review the options list (window sticker) on some of the early Camaro's, Corvette's, Chevelle's, Mustang's, and Mopar offerings...the list is long and awesome.

How cool to be able to order the motor...trans...rear...trans & rear ratios...with or w/o radio or heat...wheels...tires...fuel tank size...suspension set-ups....etc...

back then, one could order a race car from the factory...take delivery on Saturday...race on Sunday.

what happened?...oh yeah, government and political correctness happened. :(

And even in those days, you couldn't break the Detroit packages.
You could sometimes order through the fleet manager and get something somewhat unique like an SS/RS package with a 396 and hideaway headlights, but you still couldn't get something not on the factory order sheet.

But in those days, dealerships like Yenko and Dana would create custom versions of factory packages, including graphics, and actually inventory them.
Similar to the limited release factory options, such as the 1969 ZL1, the public sales were used to meet minimum production requirements to qualify under NHRA/AHRA for stock and superstock classes.
A happy side effect of these "dealer customs" was it made the dealership names common in "garage talk" and drove additional sales.
