Trimming for larger tires.

I know this sounds really dumb but when people say they have to trim to get larger tires to go under their truck what exactly do they mean? What exactly are they trimming? Anybody got any pics?

Depends on what size you go with. Trimming could simply mean a little plastic off of the fender or it could meant cutting metal like in a cab mount chop. the term trimming could mean a lot or a little

1st gen so, cab mount chop is not necessary.

They are usually referring to the "pinch weld mod", search it, there are many threads discussing this topic.

 

Oh okay lol. Well I have a 2000 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. I read about giving it a 2 and a half inch lift with Bilstein 5100 shocks. I know that's not enough for 33's but what about if you put those on with spacers? Would that not give you more than a 2 1/2 inch lift? Or would doing this hurt it or put strain on certain parts?

 

Does that even make sense?

 

I have 33x12.50s with a 2.5 inch lift. I cut part of the lower plastic valence on the stock front bumper at an angle, part of the chrome part on the bumper at an angle, did the pinch weld mod, and some of the inner fender plastic. They dont rub now

 

Oh alright that doesn't sound that bad at all. Now I read that you can get a 3" leveling kit. Do you think that would help any?

 

you trim where it rubs

 

would put strain on the cv shafts. and as far as fitting 33's a 2 1/2" should fit them i was right at 3" before i pet my winch bumper and winch on witch made front end sag another 1 1/2"-2" and my 33's are fine until i hit a bump with steering turned. jet rubbing pinch weld though no big deal and you may have to look at frame contact mine rubs just a little nothing you can really do about it and it docent heart anything so i just left mine alone. one thing you might need tough is different wheels i had to change mine so tire docent rub on upper control arm. as far as trimming not a big deal it would just be the pinch weld and that takes some sort of cut off wheel like a dermal or air powered i would use the air power if its available though just a lot faster. I'm going todo some trimming this weekend i will get some pics for you if you want.

The backspacing of your wheel and the width of the tire you choose will make a difference in what you need to cut/trim also...

 

yep..the less backspacing the more the tire will rub in the fender as the wheel gets pushing out more

more backspacing the more it'll rub on the pinch weld which is easy to cut out but if you suck the wheel in too much then you risk rubbing on the UCA and frame..which you cant cut.

 

And your lift isnt gonna matter much if your stuffing your tires into the fender wells if your planning on doing any offroading.
