if you try to fight the ticket and lose it will cost you ~$370 (~$100 gas + $219 + $50 court fee).

its a hold button. there is a handheld remote for the radar, with a button to put the radar on 'hold" until you see the vehicle, you press it to release the hold and it picks up speed. when said radar is in hold state, it is not broadcasting radar waves, thus un-noticable to the superior radar detector. sure, most people dont use it while just patrolling, but someone running stationary radar most definitely is using it, and would nail you every time, rendering the radar detector unusable. any more questions?

i dont have a picture of it, but its pretty easy to imagine a small rectangular remote with two buttons on it

Is it possible to have a shit reading on those radars, this was a story I told by a family member:

So they were driving their truck down a city road posted 50 km/h and a cop pulls then over saying they were doing 110km/ h (hard for me to believe you could even get up that fast on the road), so they asked to see the radar and apparently the cop had calibrated it wrong and a none moving vehicle was shown to go 50 km/h. Is this even possible sounded like bs to me

it is possible, you are supposed to calibrate the radar before your shift with a metal "fork" to make sure it is reading properly. seeing the radar wouldnt have helped your family member as the speed doesnt stay on the screen nor does it print anything saying what it read. you have to use common sense, and try to give people the benefit of doubt. some radars get fucked up and need to be fixed, there is a lot that affects what it reads. i wont go into detail but there are other parts to using radar than just looking at the screen and stopping people, monkeys could do that. think of it like checks and balances... also, radar picks up the heavier of two objects, though most can show two speeds of two cars.

I'm sitting there thinking that if a cop is chilling on the side of the road, with this hold button on until he wants to pop a car for speeding, isn't there some kind of actual crime going on that would be of greater benefit to the taxpayer? Oh man, dude is going 10 over, all hell is about to break loose.

Hwy 395 between LA and Mammoth is good for that.
65 limit, outside of town, it drops to 55, 45, 35, then 25.

Kinda cool... in my '03 Tundra, all I had to do was cancel the cruise and leave my foot off the gas... the truck would naturally decel right along with the signs.

But while working in Bishop, I asked a CHP officer what the "tolerance" was on 395. He said that in town, 5 over was a ticket because of the high tourist/pedestrian traffic. Out where the limit is 65, he said that he gets so many "customers" doing 80+ that they don't even give you a 2nd look below that.

Tickets along 395 used to be referred to as the "Mammoth Tax"

LE officers have different assignments and responsibilities.

and, is it not a benefit to the taxpayers to ensure safe roadway conditions?

of course...I'm not implying that 10mph over is a big deal, but he OP was sighted for almost 20 over in a 40mph zone...that will usually trigger a citation.

Oldest line in the book... and I'm sure the department's detectives are on those cases.
Patrol officers are out there for two primary reasons... provide a visible presence that helps to deter crime in general (are you going to rob a liquor store when you see a cop car parked across the street, even though he appears to be looking for speeders?), and to reduce traffic violations.

And FWIW, a LOT of warnings are given out. I've been warned 5 times in the last 20 years (twice by CHP)... haven't had a ticket since 1991. Attitude is everything.
The city I work in, I see cops pull people over all day long, and in most of those stops (I'm a traffic signal guy and "work the streets") are too short to be cites... and I'm not seeing the ticket be handed over. Just a quick conversation and the driver scoots.
I asked one of the motorcycle cops about it and he said that was the case for most of the department except for the rookies.

If there were, the cop would be all over the "actual crime" and ignore the speeder.

Just because a cop is set up in a speed trap, doesn't mean he's a lazy cop.

If you had a business and you paid people to work you expect them to be moving all the time right? That's how most people look at cops most of the time you just see them driving around or sitting in there cars, tax payers are paying them to work and most some people just think they are lazy cops and I doubt that perception will ever change.

(I'm in no way saying that's how I feel, I'm just saying that's how some people think)

So you do not dispute my claim.

My statement of +10 over is not related to OP, this is why it doesnt match his exact speed. So I agree, +10 isnt a big deal.

A Cop paroling would provide the same effect of deterrence. I could argue that a stationary cop focusing on 1 crime is actually less effective.

A cop set up in a speed trap is collecting money, not protecting society. I don't blame the cop, there is probably a "quota" in place meaning its not official but it can be negative to not write citations.

You realize a town will have more than one cop on duty.

So its excusable to not utilize a resource as efficiently as possible?

a stationary cop isn't focusing on one crime (speeding). they could just as easily bust someone for reckless driving, drunk driving, etc.
I could argue that when someone gets a speeding ticket they would be less likely to speed in the future, making roadways safer.
