Sub Questions.

So my birthday is coming up and i was asked if i had an idea of what I would like. I was looking at this sub...http://www.crutchfield.com/p_20610C124/Kicker-10C124.html?tp=111#details-tab
it has many great reviews. just want to add a little thump not blow peoples minds....questions are: 1. Anybody with experience? What was it? 2. What kind of amp do i need to properly run this sub? like watts and mono or stuff like that. 3. In the sight it has volume specs for a sealed box..How do i find out what the actual demensions of the box should be? 4. And lastly i have supply to basically any kind of hardwood i want. Is there a certian wood that works better than mdf? like cherry, maple, poplar? Thanks. as you can tell i am not to sub savy

 

oh and if sombody has a better suggestion on a sub under the $100 range please let me know.

 

If you click on details it has some of what your looking for. I dont know much about audio but it says peak 300 power which is what my jl is and i have a 250 mono block amp powering it. Click on enclosure compatibilty under the details and it has more specs on a box. And this is a guess but i assume the denser the wood the better the sound. I hope this helps a little till somone better chims in.

 

Where are you trying to put it? The manual calls for 1.25ft^3 and 150w RMS. In its most basic form 1.25ft^3 is ~15.5x15.5x15.5 cube. MDF is just fine for making woofer boxes and is what is used in car audio 99.9% of the time and 3/4in thick is great for that sub just make sure to make straight cuts and glue your joint together then seal the box on the inside with either wood glue, caulk, silicon, etc. Kicker stuff is good to bump with but not the best sound quality but if you just want a little bump on some upgraded door speakers, or even stock, it'll do fine because, I'm assuming, you don't seem to be looking to put a lot of money into a high caliber sq system and, like you said, are just looking to fill out some low's with a little bump. A good amp would be something in the 200RMS zone so that you can run the full rms of the sub and still be able to dial the amp gain's back so that it won't clip most amps sit about 3/4-1/2 gain setting and won't clip. Measure you max dimension's for wherever you want to put the sub and then use an online box calculator to find the air space, you could do the math but it's 10x's easier to use an online calculator. I would rather quality over huge bump

 

I'd look into Polk Audio I believe their 10's are around 130 and I love my 8's.

Also do I want or not want voice coils?

 

For that you want something around 250-300RMS to max out the rms of the sub. Don't bother reading max power RMS is what the sub can handle continuously and safely.

 

Well I have a cheap Dual 400w amp will that work for the mean time halfway decently

 

FYI I would pick this up http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1081062W/Infinity-1062w.html?tp=111 Infinity reference 10", as for the amp a 300-800watt mono amp. I have one, a few years ago. These subs hit hard. What I look for is the sensitivty of the speaker, the higher the number is the louder it will be at low volumes. In comparaison to other subs in it's class. Any amp will do, as long as it's between the RMS ranges. Duel voice coils is better for me IMHO, better in matching to amps or adding other subs. Just my 2 cent.

 

Any sub is better than that one. I tried tuning someones setup with that sub and it was horrible. CompVR's are better but you'll pay more.

The other suggestions in this thread are much better options.
