Are you talking about the looped bar? If so that's called a stinger and sometimes called a boner bar (for obvious reasons :p). I'm not entirely sure if there's one exact reason for it...but I've heard of various ones.

Some say it's just for looks, in other cases it seems to help protect the hood in case of a roll over since it keeps it up off the ground a bit, I've heard of some possibly using it as a tow point (but not too sure on that one and probably not a good idea) and some short wheel based vehicles (like Jeeps) say it helps them from rolling when going down steep things...it also guides it to fall left or right versus flat on the roof in this case. I've heard a select few say it helps with approach angle in the way that if you give it a little gas it will help the vehicle slide up...but it's more of a hindrance to approach angle if you don't do that lol

Mine? I just like how they look haha I also like to use it as a jungle gym and take sexy pictures on it LOL

Real life display of one purpose:

Used to provent a foward rollover going down a huge incline. Prevents alot of hood damage when you hit something. Also really great because you know exactly how far away from the bumper something is. On tight turns i just drive untill my mini stinger hits the tree or rock. Will keep the motor a bit higher possibly preventing damage to that if you ended up upsidedown. You would not use it as a tow point thought. lots of leverage you could easily bend your bumper. Also they make sweet drying racks when your on the beach.
