a good holster and good gun belt are necessities... also, the more training, the better ;)

for concealment, can't beat IWB - i prefer kydex... actually for my carry, i'm using a kydex holster that is leather-lined on the inside for good retention and a consistent draw feel...

I was about to say the exact same thing. My biggest pet peeve is some one that picks up a gun and there finger goes straight to the trigger. Just my .02 dont take it personal.

I dont hunt, i have two I keep for home security. A XD 40 and mossburg 550. A few years ago I caught people breaking into my car at my parents farm in alabama. Alabama allows for force to be used against people who put your life or property at risk. I shot the guy with my mossburg. Thought is was birdshot loaded but it was a slug. oops, he lost the leg. When they were searching him he had crack on him and admitted to breaking into 10 other cars in the neighborhood. I win

Used to have many then fell into the "met a girl who hates guns" situation - now I'm down to a single pistol: a 5-shot, .357 revolver.

I kept that one specifically because:

    1. I have my CCW for both RI and FL so I do carry - and when carrying .357 anything more than 5 shots would pull my pants down to my knees.

    2. I keep it in my truck most of the time so a revolver is perfect for that (no springs to lose tension, little maintenance, high weather resistance, etc.).

    3. .357 so I can use .38 while target shooting and save my hand.

    4. Can use shot shells for when I'm hiking to take care of snakes, annoying chipmunks, etc.

    5. It's a concealed hammer, snub-nosed, blued revolver... at the very least it's the sexiest one I owned at the time anyway.

wow way to flaunt your deployment. how about you let your sevice stand for itself without tring to used it as leverage in an argument.

edit: his right is not eroding because he gave up is guns. He is chosing his priorities. His rights have not changed

your priority not his. The important factor is that he HAS the right. He is not giving it up. Lose the attitude. he has the right to prioitize his life as he sees fit without you being a dick. Remeber hero, you went to war for his rights.

edit: I reread my post and dont think my hero comment came off condencending enough so I just wanted you to know that you are not a freeking hero.

j83soldier - Thanks for the assist. You are why I love this site; logic is still present in MOST members...

New Mexico Taco - If any of j83solider's points didn't get you to understand the actual view vs. your current view then I have nothing to add. Put simply: I am still exercising my rights - I did not give my arms completely; however, my priorities have changed now that I am married to a woman whose roommate at med school was murdered in the bedroom next to hers while she was home (the lunatic shot her roommate 38 times in the head, then put 1 in his own brain).

Since I'm dealing with a high school debate team member, I already know your response... "She should WANT you to have a gun now to defend her!". True, but she has ME to defend her; the pistol is just an instrument. It's up to me to develop the entire strategy to make her safe (home security system, landline phone, evac plan, etc).

Don't ever assume you understand the entire picture - you might be wrong.

And thank you for your service. Although I can only shake my head at the fact that you used your position as a veteran to defend yourself against a "fat comment" - I'll direct my thanks towards ALL vets and what they usually stand for.

I'm not trying to start a fight or arguement here... I just have a question. What about if you aren't there, power and phone are out? You can't be with her 24/7/365... Does she know how to use the one gun you have?

That must have been a horrible experience for her and I can understand her reluctance to have a gun... I'd think she'd want to learn to use one, so she could defend herself from crumbs like that :notsure:

It's a great point and I've attempted this and will continue to. The part that you and I will always have issues with is that we are trying to rationalize an irrational fear. It's the actual sight of a gun that makes her sick to her stomach (when the SWAT broke into her apt they pointed a AR15 at her face and yelled at her to get down on the ground). I equate it to a fear of spiders - no amount of negotiation will get someone to fully come to terms with that.

I'm also of the opinion that, in this day and age, if someone has made up their mind to kill you and they are willing to accept the consequences - then there is nothing you can do to stop them if they plan accordingly. You simply have to do your best to swing the odds closer to your favor.

 Yeah, I guess I'd be afraid of guns after all that, too. I hope she never had to go through anything like that ever again. Good luck to you both.

    Too few to list.
Wasn't on the poll but I have mine for the sport of target shooting and also for protection. What's the use of having it for protection if you can't hit your target?
