education is key. It might be something that you have to tackle togeather with therapy as well, that is if both of you feel strongly enough about the issue. That is a call only YOU can make. I am apalled by the people judgeing this. I have grown up with firearms. I dont hunt because of personal reasons but have nothing against it. I also believe people are good but there is alot of evil out there. I have shot a person in the states with a personal weapon and have a job in which I use a firearm as a carpenter uses a hammer. All this said if my fiance' felt this strongly and asked me to get rid of them I would because I love her. Its not giving up rights, it sure as hell is not time to get a new girl; its time to accomidate a loved one until such a time arrises that that we could (if the time ever arises) work on her fears. I think sacrifice is a physical demonstration of commitment. Good on ya bro.

Thanks man - again, I'm glad that there are your type of people on this board.

I've been around firearms my entire life as well and have found that most people fit into one of these buckets:

    The Professional

    The Collector

    The Sportsman

    The Enthusiast

    The Gun-loving Retard

Unfortunately we're stirring up that last group with our conversation... haha.

This is 100% correct. Stating that a weapon is all you need for a defense plan is like stepping outside the wire with nothing but a M4 with the intention of conducting a mission - so much more is needed: recon, route planning, evac plan, casualty collection point, contingency plans, comms equipment, etc.

Not trying to pretend that I know the answers to your situation, but I dated a girl once that wasn't comfortable carrying concealed (my preference, since I couldn't be with her all the time). Our solution was to look into combative / martial arts training. It made sense to us that if she wasn't going to have strong offensive capabilities (so to speak), that she should try and develop strong defensive capabilities. My hope was that if a situation arose, she could evac herself to a safe place until the cavalry could arrive.

Just my two cents that could augment the preexisting strategy.

I do not yet own a firearm in my own name, but I fully intend to go out and buy myself both a rifle and a shotgun some time soon. I'm not old enough to purchase a handgun yet, however. I've still got about a year and a half until I can own a handgun. So in the meantime, I'm going to stock up on some choice rifles.
We keep firearms in the house for both protection and for hunting, but they are more for protection these days than anything.

That is a fantastic idea... I built a boxing gym in my garage so it wouldn't take much to get a professional in here to help her better handle herself. The only thing I could show her in that respect is how to put together a proper fist and deliver a 4-knuckle attitude adjuster... haha.

Some free advice to you since it's not from me but rather someone we can both respect, Abraham Lincoln:

Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

I'd sit this one out from now on.

Ohhhhh my god. Ok guy, you are a douche. Let let die. No, the gun freeks were not the reason. It was farmers, printers, blacksmiths; in short men armed with values who possessed guns that won against the british. In WW2, yes the quote is correct but an armed population does not mean a gun nut nation. Having a gun does not make you a man, it is not an obligation. You talk like a fucking child. Let this die you made your point, he made his no you insist on making your. Guns are our right. They are not the end all be all of America. In fact I would perfer less guns and more morals, less guns more work ethic. that would fix america a hell of a lot more quickly than every person owning a firearm. I will end this by saying yet again gun owning is a right. If a person chooses not to then who cares.

I have heard it , but didn't know who it was attributed to , I like it a lot .

I have no issues with guns . I also don't know anyone at all that owns a handgun , let alone carries one , we seem to survive .

Another for your arsenal - however, by sharing I'm providing evidence of my hypocrisy...

Im torn man, I hate that some people feel obligated to carry for safety. I dont. I believe it is unnessary, that I can handle myself well enough. What kind of enviorment do we create if we are worried about violence so much. When I get to wondering though I alway remind myself.....Fuck at least we aint mexico or CANADA!!:D

Not trying to start a "debate", but just thought I'd offer my feelings on the above:

When I carry I don't worry about anything (I live in Atlanta). My life is free of fear when I know I have made realistic preparations to preserve my safety. It is all mental preparation, but a quote I like sums it up pretty well:

"I walk through the valley in the shadow death and I fear no evil, because I am the meanest, most badass mother f*cker in the whole goddam valley"
    - Jar Head

I also carry because I worry I would be unable to help or assist if a situation arose that needed a "strong will" to resolve (and I wasn't armed). For example, if I was in the vicinity of a woman being raped / beaten etc. and was powerless to help her (assuming there was more than one attacker, they were armed, etc.) I would live with that for the rest of my life. Especially if that person was someone that I cared about (girlfriend, sister, etc.).

I'm also really glad I don't live in Mexico :)

Ive said it 100 times, it is a personal choice. I am fine without. There is no right answer to this. End of derailing the thread....
