Trim the wood down flush - get rid of all the stragly ends. You want to get rid of places for water to sit, bugs to hide and spray/brush wound seal on it. And hope for the best. The damage doesn't look that bad, but...

Not usually driving on the street anyway... Very rarely you might see military trucks on a trailer. But never a tank driving down the road.

Thanks. The one up higher doesn't look as bad, hopefully I can actually get up to it safely to seal it. Looking at the old one I'm surprised that hasn't weakened the tree. It's fairly deep and likely allows water to sit in it, and it's at the base of the tree. Plus I never did anything to seal that one.

Looks like the lower is the worst and will keep rotting. IMHO I would just cut it down. Then maybe you could bring some good wood for camping instead of that rotten crap :D

It will take it a LONG time, but if you look around the edges, the tree is starting to heal itself. I was reading a "study" about sealing tree wounds and it goes both ways. I always cover where I find damage or cut a branch, but some say it doesn't matter :notsure:

I am being serious about the lower chunk missing. From my limited experience I do not think that tree will make it int he long run.

This tree looked fine up until it toppled.

That was a couple of years ago. Just fell over one night-never heard it either :) It was rotten a good way up the trunk too.

    .
Wow, that's a huge wound, all the meristematic tissue is gone

Same with that one, that darker tissue toward the top of the wound looks like it could be rot, if it is spongy or breaks right of, it's rot

    ditto

Notice how the wound has not changed much since it broke off, the dead tissue inside that is probably rotting.

Wow, it's a wonder that poor tree is still alive. You could cut off the excess tissue sticking out of these wounds and try a sealer, but IMO, it's most likey going to continue to shed limbs in future storms and create a hazard. I'm not a certed arborist but i've been in the landscape industry for 20 years. I think you should probably cut that tree down:(

 This is what I'm worried about. It's a nice tree that gives good shade to the yard but I don't want it falling on me head (or anyone else's) while enjoying said shade.

Trees will typically take 2 to 3 years to die off. From the bottom wound I would say just cut it down and replant another tree in its place.
