Factory alloys, weights on the outside

On my 2012 alloys there are weights on the outside and on the inside of the alloy rims?

I want to powder coat these factory alloys black, I don't think weights would look that good on black? They blend in now because my alloys are silver but black would be different.

Other wheels don't have weights on the outside, what gives?

There are two different kinda of weights.

Tape, which go on the "inside" of the wheel on the barrel.

And clip, which you have on your wheels.

Before you get them powder coated, take the weights off. When you go get them rebalanced, just ask for tape weights instead of steel clip weights.

They should be able to do it with just the tape weights. I had just tape weights for a long time until I got tires and forgot to tell the shop to only use them. Now, I have both because they were too lazy to remove the old weights...

 

The factory wheels have weights on both sides of wheel(dynamic balancing), stick on weights are in the center of the wheel(static balancing). Bear in mind static is only about 80% accurate due to placement on wheel. You will get a more accurate balance with weights on both sides of wheel.

 

Are aftermarket rims made better and that's why they don't have visual weights on the outsides?

 

Not necessarily.

Most aftermarket rims don't have an outer lip to put the clip style weights on. That's why they normally have tape weights.

Not always the case.

You can dynamic balance a wheel with tape weights.

One set right behind the spokes

The other set on the back edge of the wheel.

 

I had a part time job as a tire monkey a while back and I know from experience that you can dynamically balance Tacoma wheels with tape weights. Although you cannot affix the tape weights to both edges, you can still place the weights on the inside of the wheel. Problem is you have to use more weights to compensate for placement. If they dynamically balance the wheel, have them start with the outside edge reading first (as weight placement will throw off the reading for the inside weight).

 

Um Pugga, you should probably get your rims rebalanced. If you have two different sets of weights on there, and they are on opposite sides, or close to it, your wheels are counter balanced. You can get some wacky tire wear and vibes.
