Why don't dealers know what they're talking about?

I think that if I sold Toyotas for a living I would know a little bit about the product lines and available models, wouldn't you?

I've been trying to find a 2013 Access cab, V6 Manual 6 speed in MGM.

    I've had dealers tell me:

"they don't make Tacomas with a manual transmission"

"you mean an X-runner? that's the only one with a stick shift"

    "there's a 5 speed manual but not a 6 speed"

Why do I have to explain what combinations are available to people who make their living selling these trucks?

I also had one sales "man" who sounds like he's 19 and been working there for 2 weeks (I can hear his manager or trainer in the background telling him what to tell me) say that the Tacoma is changing for 2014.

"you know that right?. You know that this is the last year and then they will be totally different, right"

I understand that there is not much demand for 4X4s here in south Florida but it should not be so hard to get the truck I want. What is the point of showing the inventory on their websites if they can't get the truck?

    Rant over. For now.

probably because most people they deal with are even more clueless then they are. makes it easier to sell a more expensive truck, and make more monies.

Why dont you just direct whoever you are dealing with to the Toyota website, and show them what you want? Or print out the details of what you want from the Toyota and show it to them. Dealers are idiots, you are going to have to hold their hand and show them.

My dealer told me how amazing the JBL system was, when I asked how much watts it pushes out he stared at me like I was speaking Russian.

I can tell you over the years I have made it a habbit of asking sales people so how long you been here? And the turn over is mind blowing chances are good last week they were selling Hyundai down the street. I spent five years working as a line tech at a Chevy dealer years ago. It was a small town family owned store and most of the poeple working there sells, techs, and office people had 5 years there minimum many had 20 plus years there. In the new world of MEGA dealers you don't see that anymore. It's a shame really customer service and confidence in the dealer suffers.

Yea, not many buyers know what they are buying, so the uneducated salesman can get away with their false bull$h!t.

I find it fun sometimes to ask them questions that I know the answer to and see what kind of responses I get.

Once I asked about the Tranny dipstick (knowing they don't have one). Salesman puffs up chest, says of course they do, opens hood and points to the engine oil dipstick. I say, what about the engine oil dipstick, he then points to the oil fill cap.:goingcrazy:

Another time, asked a salesman why TRD Sports have hood skewps. Of course it is to get more airflow to the engine bay, the salesman said. :der:

I would be terrible. I'm not a good liar and I feel bad for people.

I would give the best deals and go broke.

Salesmen, service managers... they're all basically full of bull shit. After having the front/rear differential and transfer case gear oils changed out (wanted them to break the plugs free for the first time) they charged me for 11 qts when it takes around around 6. After asking the service manager about this his responce was... "we'll, sometimes they take more." What a load of crap!

I've had service managers trying to give me the run around multiple times now and i've caught them at it. It's pretty funny! They assume you don't have any knowledge about your truck but this site educates one quite well. Now when they see me coming it's zero bullshit!

ok first to the op if your looking for a specific truck like the one you mentioned you should print it out and take it in or tell the salesmen this is the only one i want and build it on the website. not every dealer has every possible configuration of truck. they get built and shipped to random dealers. that is not an excuse for a salesmen to not know that they are 6 spd manuals though. i used to work at a dealer and may again in the future. salesmen require u to be 18, have a drivers license and to pass a drug test...thats it for entry level. so probably the reason you get some dumb answers. after you get a job as a salesmen you start training on the line you are selling but still have to actually try to sell cars while training. if you want to avoid salesmen in general build your truck on line pick the dealer that you like or can at least stand and email their internet department. that way you dont actually go there till the internet department locates your truck and you go to do paperwork or test drive a similar optioned one to see if thats what your really want.
also as far as the service department goes if something happens that is not right put in on the toyota email about your visit. those go straight to toyota then to the dealer and trust me dealerships care what happens on their surveys...chances are the service advisor will ask you before you leave how everything was. so they can try to fix it if something happens before toyota finds out about it. ok enough standing up for dealerships now... i know dumb stuff happens at a lot of them if not the majority of them. i have had it happen to me and when i worked their made some mistakes. but if you dont bring it up it wont get addressed. i had my 5k service done at toyota and the lube tech didnt even change the oil or filter. long story short i noticed it called them, went back and got it fixed and put it on the survey...guess who doesnt work there any more.. that lube tech. turns out it wasnt his first time.

Because salespeople are like politicians. They make promises that they don't understand and have no intention of keeping so long as they get your money or vote.

I schooled my salesman on the my truck before I bought it...most of his replies were "Oh really?" "hmmm...didn't know that"...etc.

I hear you, but they aren't all like that. The sales droid that I bought my truck from was knowledgeable and best of all, a car geek like me.

He keeps me in free car washes in exchange for pics of my adventures.

Point is, some sales people are good at what they do. They can be damned hard to find sometimes, though.

I have fun with the salesmen. I love checking out new cars, so I go to a dealership and ask questions that I already know the answers to just to find out how they will answer. Kind of entertaining to hear their BS.
