A very good friend of mine who has family in Long Island (Oceanside & Long Beach) gave me this link to their local church who has a disaster relief fund going. Thought I would post in case someone was interested in giving a donation. http://www.thebridgeli.com/pages/page.asp?page_id=203484

Power is slowly coming back to manhattan, they are aiming to have a lot on line by Sunday AM. I went for a bike ride downtown last night on the westside highway. I took video which i will try to post when i get home from work. Here are some pics though. It is so eerily quiet down there. I didn't cross the highway b/c the traffic lights are out and people were driving between 40mph and 80mph.

This one is no joke. I just turned the flash off. Give your eyes a second to focus. It is really this dark (this was 23rd and 12th).

Same location, I adjusted the setting and used the cars headlights...

here is slightly lower, those are lights from a ConEd crew...

It's like a ghost town down there. There is a police car every few blocks but thats it. Traffic is a free for all. NYC is an eery place, lots of hi-rises. People don't want to go home b/c fear starts to set in about who is in the building, who is on the streets, etc. All of those supermarkets, delis, restaurants, drug stores are closed. Elderly people that live here rely on the stores "downstairs". I was here for the Blackout in 2003, but that only lasted 2 days. This is going on 6 tomorrow.

My heart goes out to everyone in the coastal areas that lost so much more than just power, that is just a temporary inconvenience. The devestation is heartbreaking to see my friends pile the contents of their homes out on the street, or to see pictures of strangers just crying. I have to share my colleagues email because it shows the worst and the best in one paragraph. They have a 3 month old baby and a 2 year old:
"Thanks Brian, I really appreciate it. Breezy is devastated, I was there all day today helping family and friends clean up and salvage what they could. Basically from Ocean Walk to Irving walk from Oceanside to the Ocean was completely burned down. Every home gone. I lived on Oceanside between Gotham and Hudson, my house burned down to the foundation. I am sure you and your family know how special our community is, we will clean up move on and rebuild better than before."
That pic of the Sandwhich shop on here sending meals in, and stories of all the work crews coming in to help clear trees and debris is awesome. The marathon on Sunday is the next poitn of contention, a lot of people are unhappy that it is taking place as it starts in an area of Staten Island that was hit hard and will take police/fire/ems resources away from where they are needed most right now, as well as road closures that will prevent people from getting in/out (the Verrazano Bridge).
Just as time goes by, realize that people will be dealing with this for a while. There isn't a quick fix and it is really sad.

A six man crew from Decatur Utilities headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees.
The general manager of Decatur Utilities, Ray Hardin told Fox Business they were presented documents from the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers at a staging area in Virginia. The documents stated they had to affiliate with a union to work, which the crews could not agree to.
Hardin said the crews were not turned away but were made to believe that affiliating with the union was a requirement to work.
As they waited for confirmation on the documents, crews received word that Seaside Heights had received the assistance they needed from other sources.

They attempted to look for work in other areas but because a resolution could not be reached, they made the decision late Thursday night to return home.

Moore said they're frustrated being told "thanks, but no thanks."
Huntsville Utilities said they were not turned away and are in Long Island, New York working.
Joe Wheeler EMC said they did not respond to New Jersey, but did go up to Maryland and headed home once they were done.

Three generators were set up Friday to provide electricity to the marathon’s media tent in Central Park along the Upper West Side.
The two active generators crank out 800 kilowatts of electricity, which would be enough to power 400 homes, the New York Post reported. The third unit, a backup, sits idle, in case one of others fails, the paper said.

Bloomberg has vowed the marathon will not divert any resources from victims, and expects power to be restored to downtown Manhattan by race day. In defending his decision to go forward, the mayor cited the thousands of out-of-town visitors who come for the marathon.

Who have nowhere to stay now as hotels are full of people who are put out of their homes and are now further congesting an already huge traffic mess limiting the ability of crews to get help to people. Brilliant.

I cant believe there are people almost starving in some areas and marathon runners are probably carbo-loading right now for their "economic and spiritually up-lifting event".

    Get help to those people!
