Why did I wait...? Intermittent wipers installed!

So I bought the 2011 off the showroom floor knowing it didn't have delay wipers. No biggie.

Biggie.

Well, more of a minor annoyance than anything, but I finally broke down this week and ordered the delay wiper stalk - part #

84652-02610 (fits 2009+ models apparently).

I ordered mine from my local dealer as the difference between their price and those I found online (plus shipping) was about 10 bucks. I'd rather build the relationship with the dealer for the money. Oh yeah, online would have taken 3 -4 days to reach me; my dealer had my part the next day.

I know it fits my 2011 Tacoma and every function works as expected.

Timing: It took me 15 minutes from picking up the wiper stalk on my dining room table until putting my tools away in the garage. Literally a 10 minute install.

1 - Getting the upper & lower steering column covers apart was a bit fiddly, but with some gentle, persistant prying, it popped apart easily enough. Obviously I had to remove the two screws on the face of the column, partially hidden by the steering wheel itself. Just turn the wheel from side to side and you'll see the TWO screws.

2 - As others have suggested, use plastic, thin "somethings" to help avoid scratching your plastics when prying them apart. I actually used the blade of a knife, along its length, with got it open a bit. I started with the left side and as soon as that popped apart, the right side was a cinch. I DO NOT recommend using the knife as their are wires in that column. Best way to avoid slicing one is to NOT USE A KNIFE.

TIP: loosen the steering column adjuster to give youself room above the column

TIP: you do not need to completely remove the upper and lower covers from the column - just separate them from each other

TIP: eyeball your replacement stalk and you'll see the ONE clip you need to depress to easily remove the wiper stalk on your column

3 - unclip the two wire harnesses from the lower side of the wiper stalk. Use a small screwdriver to depress the clips that hold each wire lead in place and they slide cleanly and easily out; straight down. They are located toward you and down, from the ignition. Again, referencing your replacement stalk will clear up any confusion. Don't remove the wire lead attached to the iginition unit or the world will end. Seriously, I have no idea what'll hapen if you do, but you have no need to remove this one, so don't.

4 - Depress the clip holding the wiper stalk unit in place - there is only one and its facing directly at you (may be hard to ID given all the black plastic and you're looking directly at it). A quick check on the replacement unit will show you what to look for. Depress with that small screwdriver and pull the unit to the right - it'll slide right out with a small amount of resistance.

5 - flip the now-removed, non-delay stalk in your hands, peer at it and say "Hmmm." Grab the replacement, delay wiper stalk unit and slide it into place. It'll fit right in and gives a satisfying "click" when fully seated. This assumes you haven't broken anything...

6 - Plug the wire leads back into their respective slots - they are two different sizes and only fit one location, so even if you really work at it, you can't f*ck this part up.

7 - test that sh1t - can't stress this enough - don't button it all up until you've tested each function: pulse (push up), constant on, regular; constant on, fast; intermittent, slow & fast; washer squirter

8 - roughly line up the upper and lower column covers and gently squeeze them together - they will just click back into place. (I LOVE working on quality vehicles!)

9 - reinstall the two screws originally removes on the FACE of the column (facing you) - these are behind the steering wheel.

Now, drag your spouse/girlfriend/boyfriend/neighbor/buddy/bestie or pet out the truck to show them just how much "The Man" you are for solving the issue of non-intermittent wipers. Tough call on who'll be impressed. My wife and one of my dogs were proud. My other dog didn't give a crap. *shrugs*

After all this, you're all set for that next rainfall, and you also can rest easy knowing the value of your truck just crept upwards by at least $50 come reslae time!

$120 and 15 minutes beats having to spend a few grand on a package just to get intermitent wipers.

 

It actually did kinda piss me off that in order to get intermittent wipers I had to buy an extended cab truck. Boo, hiss Toyota! Regular cab owners want options too, ya know...

 

Hi... I joined this entire forum just to say thank you for posting this. I DID NOT know my '13 PreRunner did not have intermittent wipers when I bought it earlier this month. I never checked because CARS COME WITH THIS IN THIS CENTURY. When I figured it out the next day I seriously, really considered driving it back to the dealer and returning it. I was appalled Toyota would not provide something you get on some of the cheapest, most useless cars out on the road today. I guarantee you every Hyundai made has them. My 01 Tacoma SR5 has them, and while my 78 Long Bed did not, I'd kind of assumed we'd come further than this since then as a society!

Rant aside, I ordered the part number you posted and for $120 shipped and 10 minutes of my time the world is right again. That 10 minutes includes dragging the wife & three year old out to the driveway to show them, as suggested btw. I owe you one man!

 

Yup... I did the wipers and cruise control on my '08 Regular Cab in the parking lot at work using nothing more than my multitool (I have torx bits).

No reason for Toyota not to include both features on every trim level... and get this... the regular cab 2.7 is not even available with an options package that includes them.

 

aloha rich I also have a 2007 4x4 reg cab and would like to install this intermittent switch could you give me the part number that you used ? I live in the rainest city in the usa !!! its a pain in the *** turning them on and off all the time thank you for your time .

The question should be: why should anyone have to wait. the base model Ranger at work comes stock with intermittent wipers.

No, seriously. I'm willing to bet there isn't (wasn't) a damn Daewoo, Hyundai, Suzuki, FORD or any of the lesser order of vehicles out there that doesn't include intermittent wipers. I didn't even ask at the sales-weasel about it when I bought the truck since I expect more from our brand. Just between us on this forum I have lost some trust in Toyota for not including this feature. BlueTooth? Cruise Control? Steering wheel audio controls? Yep. But why scrimp here?

The intermittent wiper was invented by Ford.

Well... technically, it was invented by Lucas, along with the intermittent headlight, and ignition system, and charging system. But Ford "perfected" the intermittent wiper and it became a standard feature on nearly all of their cars long before other manufacturers figured out how to do it without stepping on Ford's patent.

I remember being jazzed that my '88 Topaz had it, but my wife's '90 Geo Storm did not have it.

 

Sucks that intermittent wipers are not standard across the Tacoma line. According to the 2012 brochure, intermittent is only standard on the Xrunner. Int. wipers are not even an option on the regular cab and only options on the access and double cabs. Then you have to buy the SR5 or one of the TRD packages to get intermittent wipers. The same argument can probably be said for getting cruise control.

 

a nice rainy morning in CT. got the intermittent wiper stalk yesterday from Titus-Will Toyota parts. $110 + $11 for shipping. PN 84652-02601 for my 2011 Taco. Came in 4 days. Works great. About 20 minutes to install, most of the time fiddling with the cover. 2 wipes when you pull to wash, 4intermittent speeds. Then 2 speeds at constant. Thanks for all who posted pictures and advice. And I may be mistaken... not going to put the original back into verify, but it sure seems like the factory "Fast" > "Too fucking fast" when in non-intermittent is now "Decent" and "Fast"

The original "Too fucking fast" could have launched a squirrel 30ft!
