I couldn't care less about that law. I ride wherever I am safest. Usually that means trails with my mountain bike, but I don't hesitate to ride the sidewalk if it's a bad spot to be on the asphalt. I guess I could be confrontational about it and force the cars to give me some space, but if I get run over, it really doesn't matter what happens to the driver after that, I still got run over.

LOL. A bicyclist riding around on anything other than residential back roads would probably not survive very long here. Drivers just aren't expecting it. Most bicyclists in this area ride solely for recreation in their immediate neighborhoods. Haven't seen a single commuter on a bicycle, which is probably a good thing. The latter was the absolute worst (ignoring traffic laws, swerving in & out of traffic, causing traffic jams by hogging traffic lanes, etc) in the larger cities I've lived in.

I'll be honest, I can't stand bikes on the street. They slow traffic down, and because the city wants to make it more bike friendly, they replace places to park, which is at a premium, with bike lanes. Funny thing is, its perfectly legal to be on the sidewalks around here, as long as you yield to pedestrians. We have had a couple of bicyclists hit and killed, and for no reason, on main roads, early in the morning, still dark, but with a big wide open sidewalk, not a soul on it, right next to where they where hit. Makes no damn sense to me at all. Almost like people on bikes just need to be different, just because.
Right after, on the same street where the one bicyclist was killed, early in the morning, still dark, a girl on her bike was coming towards me as I drove to work. Her damn headlight was so bright it blinded me for a second! I know she wanted to be seen, but that was almost worse. Once again, right next to a big open sidewalk.

I'm all about people riding bikes, but when I rode mine, I stayed on the sidewalk, on my way to the bike trails that I lived by. I was not going to hold up traffic, and that's what I think is wrong about it.

Cities spend millions, to help traffic flow, at intersections, and bottle necks, yet they let some, "its my right" goof hold up traffic. I'll never understand.

what makes me completely bonkers is that, around here, the cyclists bitched and bitched for years to have a dedicated bike path to get through the metro area. so the city spent millions and millions of $$$ and built 26+ miles of dedicated bicycle trails that traverses through 3 cities, and guess what? NONE OF THE FUCKING CYCLISTS USE IT! they would rather ride on the roads 20 feet from the cycle trail where they are going 15% of the speed limit. and when do they ride on the roads? during the times when school traffic and commuter traffic is at a peak, so they cause maximum traffic congestion.
the dumbest thing is that we have very low-traffic highways all around this area that are only 15 minutes away that they could ride on. but they'd rather ride on some of the busiest highways in the state. on one by my house it has some huge hills, where the discrepancy between traffic and cyclists is 50mph. dangerous doesn't even begin to describe that situation

    Ya that's crazy too.

I think if you want to bike on the street, you should have a licence plate, and pay atleast part of what it cost for me to drive on the street. Also should have insurance, just as a driver.

See why we need a debate thread? [IMG]

I think you answered your own question about why the sidewalk is not used for the most part, have you ever run on a treadmill that can not keep a constant pace(when you don't want it to)? or to many people at the gym and you can't do your work out because you have to keep on having to stop and wait?

And it's much less even as compared to the street, I don't want to ride 40 miles feeling every separation between concrete sections or crack that could possible damage the bike or me. Its like driving an hour and a half on straight wash board

Lastly I think it's survival of the smartest, much like motorcycles. If someone wants to ride against traffic, blow through a stoplight or ride parallel because they "can", its only a matter of time

peak hours and you are still going the full speed limits? jkjk :p but yeah that does get annoyoing actually.

Sometimes its justified to use the street if the bike lane is full of crap. A few streets around here are like that, which forces me into the street. If its something small, we can just hop over it, but all the metal fragments tend to fly into the bike lane from the roads and stuff or pieces of wood that have fallen off of trucks and what not.

But like I said before it's only a matter of time before a cyclist who doesn't respect cars isn't riding anymore :p

Bicyclists don't obey traffic rules. I find that to be the biggest piss off. They go through reds, don't stop at stop signs, the list goes on.
