Overhead Compass/Temp Fix

To my knowledge there is no battery in there and yes, I'm assuming your problem is the same as all of ours.

 

Mine just broke again!

They replaced the sensor on try # 4....no salted roads....I havent washed my truck in 3 weeks so they cant blame it on "moisture" on the sensor.....
I asked them to get the voltage at the sensor and the display as changes or doesn't change.....they just refused and threw another display at it......

 

Could not see that it was broke. While heating the left side of bottom resistor the whole thing moved, obviously the right side was not attached.

 

you guys revisiting this..i had a buddy do mine..he builds tiny ass prototype circuit boards for a living.

he flipped my resister over to utilize the clean edge on the other side.maybe this is an option for you guys too..he had all the tools..big microscope thing..he reinforced my entire board..he said he would build me a new one next time..ahhaha.

he did say the original work was crap.

 

This is a great post! My resistors didn't appear to have any poor connections but I put some solder on the connections and it worked! There's a great video on YouTube if you would benefit from a visual. Just type in Toyota Tacoma compass repair and it should show up.

 

Long time lurker, first time poster. I just had to post and say that this fix worked perfectly. I have used this and other fixes for common problems and this site has saved me alot of money. Thank you all very much

 

When I repaired mine, I beefed up the two 510, and the three 181 diodes. when finished I coated them with clear silicon to help absorb any vibration and to help support the solder points.

 

Finally got the fix for mine....it is the wire harness!!! We will see if Toyota steps up and takes care of this one for me.....

Wow, this forum really puts the meaning in neighbors helping neighbors. thanks for the tip- I just fixed mine in about five minutes. It does have the burn mark on the LCD, but it still works. I'm new to this group- can't wait to make one of the Tacoma events.

 

Just did this again for the second time and fixed my problem. I went ahead and soldered all of the resistors because I couldn't tell which one had the problem.

Tested it out and worked great. Hopefully it'll hold another 3 - 4 years.

 

I just got my 2005 tacoma a couple of weeks ago and this temp gage compass wasn't working. The Tacoma dealer said it wasn't worth spending the money to fix as it cost hundreds of dollars. Well he was right there. It wouldn't have been worth spending hundreds of dollars but it was worth spending 30 minutes to do the quick fix suggested on this sight. It worked for me! Thanks so much for saving us all money on something that is so simple when someone takes the time to explain it.

Thanks so much for this. I literally did this in about 30 min on my lunch..the only reason i took long was because i couldn't find solder..literally easy and anyone can do! T10 torx & screwdriver

 

Great thread! I fixed mine in about 15 minutes, the only casualty was one of the little plastic tabs on the cover to the gauge module. A little crazy glue seemed to take care of it.

I soldered both resistors, both sides. Plugged it back in, and it works like a charm. I see some people are having to re-do it. I sure hope I can avoid that. Hopefully the double-sided solder will make it permanent fix. If I do have to redo the job, I'll use new resistors.

I just bought my 2006 Tacoma, and with 133K, this was the ONLY thing that was not working. It's a small thing, but so nice to have it working now. My new truck (new to me) looks and feels like a real new truck now.

I just recently joined TW and I've learned a lot from it. I have a really good question. Let's say I solder the 510s and I have a blacked out LCD and it still doesn't work, I think that the black burned color is like that of a bulb burned out I was wondering if anyone has figured how to fix that?

 

The burn mark on the display is normal, they all have that. That is the fire mark where the glass was sealed after filling the display with a gas. Lay a good ribbon of solder on each side of the resistors.

 

Thanks 45longcolt!. OK I've tried the new 47 ohm resistors from radio shack and nothing so I put one of the 510s on BC that's the only one left on the board and it worked!!, but what I noticed is that others really hot anyone has this same issue???

 

I have been having the "stuck" display also. It will just freeze up on any temp and stay there. For the time being, I have be able to "get it going" by unplugging the sensor behind the grille, turning it on, then off. Then I plug in the sensor and turn it back on again. Then it's working normally. I am looking into this problem (hence why I am here). I knew about the 510 resistor but now I am wondering if it could relate to my new problem. Or a sensor issue?
