Those of you who are not familiar with concept of rally cars... they are cars on steroids with a side order of crazy.

Entry level rally class features stock cars like subaru impreza wrx or mitsubishi lancer evolution. Every class to follow has subsequent upgrades.

Typical World Rally Championship car costs about half a million dollars with multimillion development campaign. Cars are gutted, roll cage is added, engine upgraded and rebuilt, suspension has as much as 1-3ft of travel. Special made compound tires, lots of electronics, quick shift transmissions etc etc etc. And to top it off there are 2 brave souls riding in that car. A driver who pushes car as fast as it can go (usually a lot faster than he is daring to go) and the co-pilot who reads notes without even looking up at the road.

I had the privilege of attending a rally event in finland and in person it looks even faster than on tv. Those guys ride 60-120 miles per hour through any terrain with tolerances of just inches in most cases.

If any of you are interested Discovery HD Theater and Speed Channel broadcast those events.

I've watched Pikes Peak runs since I was a kid & this is still one of the most insane runs I've seen up any kind of hill... it set a record in the mid-late 80's, damned good driver....

Yep, although what beautiful views on the way up. I would love to do that again, if I ever get out that way again.

 

I thought the oxygen bar was pretty cool, I like how far you can see from up there 14,111 feet above sea level, highest road in the lower 48

 

I don't remember the oxygen bar, its been a while since I have been up there and out that way. I think I have been to the top maybe 3 times. 1st couple I was pretty young, and we took that railway up.

 

Who needs a car when you can hike to 14,259....
