Here is my question, Owner maintenance guide says change engine oil every 5K or 6 months. Dealer say every 10k with tacoma's that use 0w20 synthetic oil  I own a 2011 with 2.7L. Thanks

You can go 10K safely on a high quality synthetic, like Toyota's 0w-20, Mobil 1 AFE 0w-20, Quaker State UD 0w-20 ect. If it were mine I would do several 5K runs then start the 10K regimen after break in metals have been removed. My 2008 is now right at 60K, i.e. out of warranty. I will now run 10K or so on synthetic or 5K on conventional. How many miles on your truck.

Don't listen to the dealer. The manufacturer says every 5K with 0w-20 synthetic and oil changes don't cost much. Mine will be changed every 5K (or less) for the life of the truck.

Toyota has backspeced Tacoma's 2.7L from 2009 forward, to use 0w-20 synthetic at 10K intervals. Many UOA's at BITOG show the oils I mentioned, perform well and have additive left at 10K. Yes I know oil is cheap compared to the price of a engine, but at some point we need to stop wasting our resources IMO.

15k on the truck. Has been maintain by dealer since late 2010. It came with the 2 year or 24K maintenance deal. The oil still looks like new.Looks like I can wait until 20K to change it. I'm going to use only synthetic, until the frame rot out like the last one.

The 2.7L is not approved for 10k oil changes for Toyota. There is a bulletin floating around from Toyota that specifically excludes the 2.7L from the new 10k intervals. You can probably find it by googling "Toyota Oil Change Frequency".

I am out of warranty, so I am doing 7500mile oil changes with full synthetic. I would need to do a couple of oil analysis done before I would feel comfortable with more than that. I just split the difference between 5k and 10k.

I'll keep checking the oil once a month to see how it is.

SVHANC is stand corrected. It seems that they did change their mind. At one point I saw it recommended.

Here is a link to a UOA I had done on Mobil 1 AFE 0w-20 run 5K. I only ran it 5K because I was still in warranty.

I switched to Amsoil 5W30 five years ago and am very glad I did. I mainly went to synthetic due to start up rpm (2200) after switching to syn-oil, the rpm dropped to 18-1900. It's common knowledge that 'startup is where the most wear occurs on the engine' and I think piss poor maintenance is 2nd cause of excessive wear. I went w/Amsoil because (1) I'd knew of it 35 years ago-a customer used it in air cooled cast iron engines and it really extended the life of his motors and (2) It was on sale when I was ready to tru it. Turns out that Amsoil, Royal Purple and another popular brand who's name escapes me-are "Ester Based Oils". There may be others, but since I'm happy with what I'm using-I haven't looked farther into it. I'd stay away from 'blends'- Why? There are no standards for the ratio or quality of the synthetic that comes in each container so it may be a teaspoon or up to a tablespoon? I'ts easier to make your own blend, say one quart of quality synthetic with four quarts of conventional (or what's know as dino oil-I believe short for dinosour), that way you know your getting a true 20% blend. You can use 2 qts out of five for a 40% blend. I also use a high quality oil filter and have gotten my used synthetic oil anaylzed twice (two different oil changes) to check for contaminants-chemical or metals. W/O the analysis, you have no idea if there is value in using synthetic, and since you've gone this far-the $20-25 for it is worth it. I also noticed the dino oil getting darker in 1,000 miles. I run the synthetic for 15,000 miles-changing fot a new oil filter at 7,500 miles. There is a guy who bought and opened up different brands of filters and made observations of his findings (with pictures) on the web, I don't remember the site but if you made it this far-you should be able to find it. Remember to check and replace you air filter as needed-not by mileage. Check it with the 'trouble light or hold it up to the sun-remember these filters are not what you want to "get every inch used"-Buy a spare when you find a good price. Good Luck.
