This is true, most of the portable generators only run 8-10 hours on 6-9 gallons of gas. What most people don't understand is, the best fuel economy happens at a 50% max load. Run you're fridge/freezer and a couple of lights and on 3200 watt machine it's already 50%. Throw an extension cord over the fence to help out your neighbor and the generator is running close to max. Fuel economy isn't anywhere near what they expected.
I was one of the lucky few that never lost power on Long Island, I topped of my truck and filled a couple of 5 gallon cans before Sandy. By shear luck I'd found a generator at Lowe's I didn't need it and have since returned it. If I had to open and use the generator I had even being conservative with it's use, I've have burned up the 10 gallons days ago.

I've been doing a lot of research on generators since, I've decided to go with a propane/NG stand by generator, before hurricane season next summer. I have NG service in the house so it only makes sense.

I have read that you can convert most gas generators to tri fuel. Gas, propane or natural gas. That is the next move for me. Gas can get expensive.

take it from some one that's been thru several storms in there lives. gas will always be in shortage after the storm. propane will most likely be available. the generators seem to run more efficiently on the propane/ng (best to have one that runs on all three), also the down fall off having a generator (and you live in a city with many people with out power) some seem to think its ok to take what the need. so be aware.

The cost to run something is always a deciding factor. For me the lesson learned from Sandy was whenever possible move away from using gas as the fuel. Stations that are out of gasoline still have diesel available (I remember a thread recently about add a diesel engine to the Tacoma), I'd so love to be able to move away from gasoline completely.

Theres huge price per watt difference between portable propane and gasoline generators. Generac 3250 watt propane generator at Northern is $700, same wattage in gasoline is only $500 The $200 is nothing compared to not being able to use the dam thing because I can't find gas.

If you can do the conversion, I say go for it.

A big thank you to Alabama Power! For sending trucks and crew to help get power back to us in South Jersey. I have seen their trucks all over the place.
