so i was thinking about doing a write up on a DIY cold air intake for the 4.0 but wanted to see if anyone was interested before i took the pics and stuff for nothing. i made a few for my older powerstrokes before and turned out well. Was hoping to have time this weekend to make it:notsure:

Saw another thread the guy made it out of carbon fiber, looked cool but it threw his check engine light.

So you're going to re-invent the wheel? Hmm, if you look close under the hood you'll see the Stock intake system is in fact a CAI...

I'm not worried about looks, it's the air flow that would concern me. You have a MAF sensor in the intake and, if you create a lot of turbulence within the intake tubing, that can cause a check engine light.

Also, the stock intake is pretty decent. It draws cold air in from the fender already. Aftermarket CAI setups actually sacrifice a little of the low end but give you some gains on the high end. If you want a cost effective CAI, I'd consider a drop in high flow filter like an AFE. Toyota actually seemed to do their homework on the intake so I'd question what you are trying to accomplish out of this setup?

I'm not trying to discourage you, this site had a lot of great DIY writeups from people who had an idea, just like you. Someone did build an intake out of carbon fiber from scratch, I can't remember if it was for the V6 or I4 though, but it was really nice looking.

but that big nasty box restricks ALOT of air flow, im going to take that out of the picture all together

Obviously not enough for Toyota Engineers to design it as is with the rated HP, before you go down this path that has been beaten to death, perhaps a site search first may net you some saved time and possible humiliation on the forums.

And that big nasty box does not restrict as much as you think it does...

Where is your proof about this?

Its not like this truck is made to go around an F1 track and a 10th of a second is huge. Its just that a truck.

If you want something that is non restricting then get a super charger.

Um that's a different Manufacture/product. So let me ask this how are you going to track your changes? Are you going to perform a baseline Dyno pre-modification? And then another post modification? or are you simply going to use the seat of your pants method?

Take a look at the open intakes like the K&N systems for our truck. They remove that big, nasty box and actually cause a DECREASE in power. The reason being, they are not drawing warm air from inside the engine bay rather than cold air from outside the engine bay.

If you're trying to make something custom for a specific look, then great, power to you. If you think you are going to come up with something better than Toyota or any of the aftermarket companies that dyno their products, then I think you're wasting your time. Remember, just because it's louder, doesn't mean it's making more power.

Also, be careful with the MAF sensor, it's fragile and expensive to replace.
