thought about it, but i'd rather get a natural gas generator with an automatic transfer switch

I dont see myself needing a portable generator, so if theres ever an event like this storm again, getting gas is a huge hassle. my girlfriend's sister waited in line for 5 hours for a $20 maximum amount of gas. lines are still over an hour even with the odd/even rationing.

With a natural gas generator i'd never need to worry about running out of fuel, and it would be large enough to run my house at full capacity, same as if there was electric. of course if I do drop a couple grand on that, I will NEVER need it.

 

Heres a thought for you.....
I have a 8750watt gen. Runs on propane cylinders are cheap and propane holds good. Plus i use it for the bbg/turkey fryer. You can get a 6 breaker transfer with all the fixens for 300. I have lost power since i got the generator. Thats the best money ive ever spent.

 

Tied into the street? Heck if I'm spending the money for a house genny hooked up, I would go off the grid and get a propane tank buried.

Not that I would ever do either cause I'm not worried about loss of electric anyway. Heck I still haven't turned the heat on in my house yet. Thinking maybe tonight after I hit the polls.

I think propane may be a more efficient fuel for generating electricity when compared to natural gas.

 

Oh and Chad's company puts in house connected generators all the time from what I remember. Pretty sure he would have some great insight to this topic.

By my previous statements was referring to a transfer switch...

I'll be picking one up this afternoon & I have a licenced electrician coming Friday to install it.

No more power issues.

 

what are you using for a generator?

 

If you turn off the Main Breaker in the panel and feed the generator to a say 30A breaker to feed the panel - what's the problem - with the main breaker off - doesn't that prevent the power from the generator entering to service from the street ?

It's pretty fucking loud...

There were a couple neighbors with smaller ones & this one drowned them out.

I had no need to power up the fridge as we had lost all the food already so I decided to run ALL my exterior lights for a while... Floods & all. It was rather obnoxious of me.
