Dealership OVER Serviced engine OIL.

They did and were very polite throughout the whole ordeal, I was shocked! I'm on my last free oil change and can't wait to start doing my own maintenance again.
At this point, I really don't feel there will be any long term damage (that seemed to be the consensus on TW).

 

that is not true about the 10000 mile oil change the 2012 tacoma toyota care says to change every 5000 miles,any reliable dealer will know this,i changed dealerships when the service guy would not listen to me about what i was reading from toyota care that the tacoma 4cyl oil change is 5000 miles,called another dealership ask them about when to change oil in tacoma they told me exactly what toyota care said every 5000 miles,my truck is still under warranty so its free.i went to the dealership that knew what they was talking about.

If you're going to Falmouth Toyota. Tell that service manager that I should have had his ass in a small can last time I was there. My truck was in the shop and denied warranty for shit they 'inspected' and deemed OK. I fought with corporate and had to use a 'friend' to get some pull. 3 weeks later and 3500 dollars worth of warranty work, I got a brand new front end. Its a long story.

 

I am going to be going to a new place that recognizes the 5000 mile oil change.

AMEN. GM screwed me royally this year on my 2006 Colorado. 2 different dealers have lied right to my face, the owner of the dealerships blindly backs his employee, and GM corporate says I did what the dealer said, which was wrong, so I am out of luck. Guess I know why Toyota is winning the battle..

On topic, I had a 1984 Chevy Camaro as a teenager with the V8. For some reason that darn stick would read full with about 4 1/3 quarts of oil. 5 would make it look like I was about to spin suds.

 

I use Copeland in Brockton..my wife has used them many years and never a bad thing, so she finally got me to go the same direction

^ No shit! Over the years i've read so many threads of oil change mishaps by quick change places and dealerships it's allmost comical. Do it yourself.

 

No one has mentioned that over filling can cause the crank to slap the oil and cause aeration which can lead to lack of lubrication and increased wear? Hmm...

At what point that starts to happen on your engine I'm not sure.

Yeah, kinda. To much oil, gets whipped like butter. Air will get mixed into it. Air is not a good lubricant.

I go 6. Toyota engineered the thing to run with 6 qts, it comes from the factory with 6 qts, I put in 6 qts.

Oil pressure is also becoming more important with newer engines, low oil could lead to low oil pressure which in turn may cause things (like the vvt-i system) to operate improperly.

Go 5.5 if anyone is really concerned.

 

my dealership just told me the exact same thing yesterday, they will not do the first one until 10,000 even though my owners manual says "5,000". i forsee great customer service from them in the future.

 

And if something oil related goes wrong because you did wait until 10000 before getting them to change it, they'll blame you for the neglect and not honor any warranty work. I would not go more than 2500 miles with the initial oil in any new vehicle regardless of free oil changes for 2 years. I would change it myself and then change it again around 7500 if using sybthetic before that first 10000 mile change they will do for free kicks in. Fuck that 10000 mile interval. I wouldn't even take their free service either, I'd ask for a discount for them not doing any free service at purchase time. Your vehicle tho.........

 

Well update time....

Toyota Corporate called me and apologized for the dealership lying to me stating they didn't change the oil (when the documentation states otherwise) and the dealership owned up to filling my oil too much.

The woman also explained that Toyota would be extending my warranty 7 years, 100,000 miles for FREE!

I will not be going back to the dealer that messed things up... but I will be continuing to get the next 4 FREE oil changes that I have left on my maintenance free package. I will be checking the oil level before I leave the dealer every time.

 

Cool. Glad they owned up and bumped your warranty. If enough people pursued this instead of just sloughing it off or never even noticing then it might start to happen less often.

 

The dipstick tube ends IN the oil in the sump.
Withdrawing the dipstick "drags" oil up the tube and will appear on the stick when reinserted.

Warm the engine up and shut it down.
Remove the dipstick and wipe.
Wait 5 minutes or more.
Reinsert the dipstick and then remove and read.

 

2012 and 2013 2.7 engines come from the factory with 0w20 synthetic oil and the proper change interval is 10,000 miles.
