Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

We have one for our home. No pics though. Has anyone made one of those portable wood stoves out of an ammo can? I want to make one

 

Do you split it for fence rails like cedar or does it need to be milled ?

 

Just moved into place with a wood burning stove. Had chimney cleaned/inspected and then threw one of those fake 4-hour logs for a test run. Followed the manual in terms of when to open/close the two levers (one underneath the burning area which I believe lets air in and the "bypass" that is above the burning area)... However the fire would begin to go out any time I shut the door throughout the entire time. I had to leave the door cracked for the entire burn just to keep it going. Any ideas?

Either you got the intake air too low , or the chimney isn't tall enough to create a good draw or the fire wasn't hot enough to turn down yet

 

Since I had the intake air maxed by having that lever the whole way out, I suspect it may have been because those cardboard logs put out very little heat.

 

Try some kindling to get the chimney warmed up first before using the log maybe

 

Thanks for the info! We had a fireplace/insert at my old place but new to wood burning stoves.

 

Usually it takes a while to heat up the chimney and get a good draw going before you can turn the air down

 

Nah just vertically into the ground either dirt tamped or cemented in typically to steeple barb wire to. They will last forever. I've cut old fallen extremely dried pieces of hedge that almost seem petrified and will actually cause sparks to fly when cutting with chainsaw. Talk about dulling your chain quick!

 

Sounds like Madrone , the dead wood is like cutting rock and it burns like coal

question(may have been posted) where do you guys get your fire wood?

 

I got a few acres , and there's plenty dead oaks I cut down when I need wood. Sometimes you can find a landowner that'll let ya cut some down for minimal cost.

I need to get some split before real cold weather comes.

oh nice. we have 5 acres, but not all of it is woods. and most the dead stuff is gone.

sadly we don’t heat with wood. but i want to start getting some stacked up for camping.

 

Sometimes construction sites are pushing trees down,New neighborhoods,etc.

We don't heat with wood,house is all electric,out in country,no gas. I can push a lot of heat out of fireplace. I have a custom wood grate made from stainless 1/2" bar stock and I put a piece of 3/16" steel in back to deflect heat. Helps a lot.

 

yeah, going to start keeping an eye out for stuff.


yeah we kinda live out in the country but not that far. we do have a gas fire place that we don’t even use.

Ahhh, the fire sure is nice this time of the year.

 

Cut up some old utility grade WRC 4x6 I've been tripping over for 5 years

Great for starter and gives off lots of heat

Cut all this with my cordless circular saw and only 2 batteries , I was pretty impressed by that
