I saw T&D Solutions fom Texas heading east to help. The guys working on my brothers street re from Utah, and near my moms work the crews are all from Norh Carolina. Its pretty awesome how many utility and tree crews have com up and helped. The majority of the north shores problems are down trees...and gas shortages. My sweet taco has been sitting with a full tank of gas. Luckily (and sadly) I havn had to drive until this oming weekend.

Oh and I'll jump on the bandwagon but I think I'm missing something .... Fuuuuuuuuck!!!

This recovery will not be over night. I just hope people do not lose sight of that in the coming months. It's one thing to have a hurricane down south, but up north, to experience a storm like this and then have temperatures drop into the 30's is just devestating. For those of you that read this, just remind yourself to check back around Thanksgiving and again in December. People will still be in need, and not looking for handouts, but genuine support and assistance. there are a lot of proud people out there that were effected and it probably crushes them to ask for help but the widespread impact requires help from others. Fortunately they didn't have any damage, but my brother w/ 2 kids (LI) and my sister w/ 4 kids (NJ) are still without power, heat, and warm water and temps are in the 30's today.

Here is a cool picture that is the cover of New York magazine now...kind of emphasizes the pics I posted of the blackout on a larger scale.

I'm not that familiar with NY's layout. The part that's out in the pic, is that all residential? Or buildings?

Thanks, I'm guessing its a pretty big area, I guess being so big, that looks like a tiny area that is out. It's hard for me to put the size into perspective, so to speak.

The photo is of the island of Manhattan looking North from the South. The dark part is all what is considered "Downtown Manhattan". To the left is the Hudson River (Westside), and the opposite river to the right is the East River. On the East River, the 1st bridge is the Brooklyn Bridge (South Street Seaport is to the left) and then the Manhattan Bridge. Where it turnes NW is the Williamsburg Bridge which goes into the Lower East Side/East Village/Alphabet City - from Brooklyn and is mostly residential). The line from power/no power was essentially 34th street (Madison Square Garden/Empire State Building). The dark area immediately below/south is primarily residential with offices/businesses intermixed depending on which avenue (businesses are more centered in that area along Park Ave). The southern tip is predominantly offices.

Some landmarks: that tall blue building that is lit (Southwest) is the Freedom Tower, still under construction. That is where WTC/ground zero was. If you follow the white and red lights up (headlights/brakelights) they end at Central Park (that small dark area up north). The Park begins on 59th street (or Central Park South). The area below the Freedom Tower is Battery Park. Wall Street is to the east of the Freedom Tower. Tribeca is just north (expensive residential area). A lot of the big banks moved to midtown after 9/11 but other companies have filled in the spaces downtown. It's also where the Courts, Mayor's office, and Federal Agencies are located.

Harlem is north of Central Park (starts around 110th) and Queens is on teh right side of the East River if you go across from the blackout line. Below that is Brooklyn. Westchester is much farther north and not in the pic (the Bronx is in between there and NYC).

Hope that helps you guys. Manhattan is a lot bigger than people realize, the island alone is 20+ square miles. The dark section is probably a solid 8-12 of that. Hope this didn't come across rude, just want to help. I love this city and am happy to share any info or answer any questions. Hope the landmarks helped.

Nope, not rude at all. Thank you. +1. I knew it was big, I just had no clue how to think of how large an area was out. Pittsburgh is a smaller city, compared to others. So its hard for me to think of the size there. My brother in law moved to NY a few years ago, to Brooklyn, so me and the wife plan to visit soon. That will let me see the size. Thanks again.
