I have a 2012 Tacoma 4dr SR5. I have been looking at getting the VIP RS3200+ alarm system put in, but I was wondering if I should go for an aftermarket. Now the only reason I dont go straight for a potentially better (and hell ill say it, cooler) aftermarket system is that I dont want to void my warranty. The dealer said aftermarket systems were the worst for voiding warrantees so Im really caught in a cross roads. So what do you guys think VIP or Aftermarket is worth the void?

the last thing you want to do is possibly void your warranty. as long as it goes "Beep Beep" you should be good. but call your insurance company afterwards! i got a discount for mine.

I will just say that an alarm system does not void your truck's warranty.

In the event that the alarm is installed improperly and causes damage to the truck, that damage is not covered by your warranty. That's not the same thing as voiding the entire warranty on the truck.

Get it installed by a good shop and it won't be a problem.

What the dealership told me was that if a wire was cut, then the warranty is voided on that piece. Im assuming (I have never installed an allarm) that a few cuts to my doors and or windows would have to be made and I fear voiding those warrantees.

Personally.... I've had aftermarket alarms in the past. Granted - they may have improved over the years and I probably didn't buy the best of the best.... But - I'd never buy an aftermarket alarm again. There were always too many 'funky' things occurring, accidental arming, disarming, couldn't start the vehicle, couldn't disarm it...bla bla bla.

I'd go with a factory system ....It's designed to work with your truck. It won't void your current warranty. It will have its own warranty. It should work flawlessly because it was designed to work with the trucks electronics/engineering.

I had a Dodge Ram a few years back. After about 6 months of ownership, I wanted to add an alarm system. According to Dodge, my truck didn't come with the propler 'computer' to accept an alarm system. I was like ...WTF??
They gave me some steering emobolizer thing instead. Yippee!
Hopefully Toyota isn't the same way....

IF that wire/piece fails, then yes, that's correct.

Factory system that plugs in without splicing and is Toyota approved is the best bet for problem free operation. I think most good installers will warranty their workmanship for the life of the alarm/vehicle.

Do not worry, laws are in place to protect you. Look up the "Magnuson Moss Warranty Act". It applies that no warranty shall be void by the use of aftermarket parts unless:
    - that part was offered for free from them
    - or, they can PROVE that the aftermarket part undoubtedly caused the failure.

This is an alert posted by the FTC last year. Many consumers have never heard of this before so its good to know. This BS myth the dealer is telling you is illegal and you are protected:

"In a Consumer Alert issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the agency confirmed that “The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket part.” The alert outlines key provisions in the law that provides protections to car owners. As defined by the FTC, an “aftermarket' part is a part made by a company other than the vehicle manufacturer or the original equipment manufacturer.”

“The FTC’s reference to aftermarket parts is equally applicable to specialty parts,” said Russ Deane, SEMA’s General Counsel. “Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the warranty cannot be conditioned to a specific brand of parts, services or vehicle modifications unless those parts or services are provided free of charge.”

The alert notes that a consumer has the right to patronize independent retail stores and repair shops for parts and service without fear of voiding the new car warranty. The dealer/vehicle manufacturer has the right to deny a warranty repair but they must demonstrate that the aftermarket part caused the problem. The warranty remains in effect for all other covered parts."

If you feel the need for an alarm, do not get their VIP system. I've taken so many out, and they are JUNK! I am a certified installer so this info is not hearsay. Get a Viper made by DEI (directed). They are the industries best alarms. PM me and I may be able to get you a great price on one. If your local in socal, I even install it. Whatever you do, PAY THE MONEY to have a GOOD AND REPUTABLE SHOP INSTALL IT! You get what you pay for! Don't fall for the cheaper rate or the sales guy that promises a legit install and "warranty"
