Hey folks, my Mom asked for a GPS this Christmas. I'm taking it one step further and thinking of getting her an i-Pad mini for that and other uses (she loves games like you can get from the App store).

Question is this - will a non-3G model do GPS in her car? I'm sure it will while connected to WiFi but out on the road she won't have WiFi access.

I want to ensure it's very easy for her to use - she's kinda old. I'd just rather not pay for a data plan for this if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

The wifi only model does not have a GPS chip, you have to get the cellular model for GPS. And I'm 99% sure you have to either be connected to wifi or have cellular data in order for GPS to work.

I'll agree with the 99%. The iPhone, which is a mini-mini-iPad, will annoy you that there is no cell data to show the map once you are out of range.

I'd see if Android tablets work. I know the phones can do mapping, we were following BrettBretterson's phone on our last offroad trip through the mountains.

It can be done on Android with Google Maps 5.7 or later. You have to manually download them. I believe the max is a 10x10 mile map and I think you can only get a limited number of downloads stored (one person said six seperate maps). Requires Android 3.0 or later.

Still gotta check the specs, he's looking for GPS not just maps. The reason the Apple devices need a data connection is two fold. One to load the maps, but two and more importantly to initiate the GPS location due to the device having "assisted" GPS. It works by knowing your general location based on cell tower or a known wifi spot and then honing in on you with GPS.

For example, I have Navigon on my iPhone which has locally stored maps. I still can't use GPS unless I have a data connection to initiate the GPS signal. It will however continue to work if I lose a data connection.

Google Navigation is turn-by-turn navigation on Android, not just google maps. If you do have a gps enabled tablet (or an antenna which connects via bluetooth) you will have offline map navigation on a tablet.

You can connect a bluetooth antenna to your iphone which will give you offline map capability. Here's one that connects to iPads, iPhones ipod touch and many android devices.

So I think it's my charger that is messing up and I bought this MacBook in January, so do you think the Apple store will replace the charger? I went to see how much it is for a new one, and it looks like its going to be around $80. I can't see myself paying $80 for a new charger, since I've had the computer for less than a year

Just got a new 4S yesterday (verizon) Haven't had time to do much with it yet but will probably be on this thread more to learn more about it. This is my first smartphone btw  so its a bit different. Got lots to learn. Love it so far though. Just not sure what case I want.

One year warranty on all Apple products, take it to a store and they should give you a new one. Gotta take the laptop and charger both. If you don't have a store nearby call support and walk through their troubleshooting steps (it can be brutal, just go with it) and they should help you out.

Thanks, it just recently started to work these past couple of days. but I'm still taking it in before my warranty is up, because I know if I don't the day after my warranty is up its going to go out.

What device exactly are you using?

I believe it should be in Settings>general>usage as snobord552 mentioned regardless. It's just a setting that says "Battery Percentage" with an on/off toggle.

Sadly, not an available option on the iPod Touch without jailbreaking. Stoopid considering it's available on every other iOS device.
