When the hurricane hit and we lost power I heard my neighbors fire theirs up and that's exactly what I said to my other neighbor. We grinned then both walked back into our dark houses

FWIW I know there are companies that manufacture silencer kits for small 4 stroke engines. I've seen them in ATV catalogs plenty of times. If volume was really that much of an issue I'd go that route.
As far as mine, it sits on my back porch and I could hardly hear it from the 2nd floor when we went to bed.

We had a generator in a race car trailer that had an exhaust off a Honda civic on it. That sumbitch would deafen you even with a big muffler. It ran a 240 welder and 4 500 wat halogens and never skipped a beat

 

Honda and Yamaha are very quiet oz. you pay for that though

 

yes, it works. but thats the problem.. you have to turn the main breaker off. even the most responsible of home owners can easily forget that and it can have catastrophic consequences.
house voltage is typically 120/240 volts. if you hook up a generator to your house and dont have it disconnected from the service, it goes out the service, out the secondaries, into a transforer which works in reverse too, and puts primary voltage (depending on the area but typically 4800 or 7200 volts) out into the primary wires.

now consider there is a primary wire down on the ground a few houses/streets/neighborhoods away. just because its on the ground doesnt mean its dead. a kid could see it and decide to pull on it or a mr. hero dad could decide to try to move it off his driveway to get it out of the way. OR... here comes a line crew to fix the problem and since they know the circuit is dead from the substation, they decide to work it with leather work gloves instead of the dielectric gloves and sleeves. if someone is touching the live conductor and touches something else.. a cross arm, a guy wire, a transformer.. basically anything else up there.. they are now a path to ground. LOTS of people have been killed because of that.

a lineman from PSE&G had a "contact" in leather gloves just a few days ago.. he lost his hands.

Good point. I do get forgetful at times so I use a Non-contact AC Voltage Detector that I call a twitty bird because of the chirping noise it makes when there is voltage present. I never touch anything w/o checking first with the twitty bird - cheap insurance - about $20.

I'm looking for a quiet , portable 5000 watt job to run my generator sub panel , any recommendations ?

 

Well it's a small ranch and I don't have any idea what the power usage is since closing was post poned due to the storm.

Haven't looked into it too much besides this, but if I could have something similar to that wired up and running on LP or natural gas I imagine I'd be pretty happy during storms. If total cost was below $5k it seems somewhat reasonable compared to what we spend on these trucks..

Also want to add a wood stove and that looks to be in the 3-5k $ area

Hope all are well, almost 240 hrs with no power, but my on loan generac 7500watt geny saving me for last 2 weeks, wired into house so I have hot running water and refridgeration and lights and sat tv. Gas still sucks arund here and lines are long. Wood stove keeps whole house as warm as the tropics, and the garage if anyone needs help with tree removal or anything, reach out, have a great day to almost all of you
