    correct

however, the french use of the word brassiere doesn't describe the product invented by an American socialite, commonally called the bra.

Sigmund Lindauer from Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany developed a brassiere for mass production in 1912 and patented it in 1913. It was mass produced by Mechanischen Trikotweberei Ludwig Maier und Cie. in Böblingen, Germany. With metal shortages, World War I encouraged the end of the corset. By the time the war ended, most fashion-conscious women in Europe and North America were wearing brassieres. From there the brassiere was adopted by women in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.[4]

The first modern brassiere to receive a patent was the one invented in 1913 by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacob. Mary Phelps Jacob had just purchased a sheer evening gown for one of her social events. At that time, the only acceptable undergarment was a corset stiffened with whaleback bones. Mary found that the whalebones poked out visible around the plunging neckline and under the sheer fabric. Two silk handkerchiefs and some pink ribbon later, Mary had designed an alternative to the corset. The corset's reign was starting to topple.

You don't have to say it-your commentary contributes to the (flawed) definition. You said it 'puzzled you"- however, that comment, and the ease upon which the answer can be ascertained, says to anyone with common logic abilities that you felt no need to pursue the answers and/or research what which "puzzled you". In layman's terms, you chose a broad statement to evoke a stereotypical response, one which isn't based on fact.

Carry on standing by your comment.
