So now that I'm in a good financial position and can afford whatever (within reason) mods I want for the Taco, the only places to off road are 3 hours away. I figured moving to a smaller town surrounded by nature (La Crosse, WI) there would be some places close by but not so much.
This is causing me to leave the truck stock due to the fear of having a mall crawler.
    Dammit.

That really sucks man. Only fix it up if you have a need for it. Out the money to a good place or find a local area to wheel!

Nothing wrong with putting better tires on the truck. Start with that and see how you like it. Better tires are almost always justified.

Do you get snow where you live?

    Mall crawler, rock crawler...who cares?

It's your truck and you can make it the way you want, if other people complain; then they can fund your mods so they actually have a reason to bitch!

^This. By most people's definition, I have a mall crawler but the truck is setup the way I want it and the way I like it. When they start making payments, that's when I'll start caring what they think :D

Otherwise, I like Billy's approach. Send the money to one of us and you can live vicariously through us!

You can afford to spend money on mods, but you can't afford the gas to drive 3 hours away?

An expo rig would be a good setup for you. Would give you the ability to travel, explore, off-road, and be self suffectient while doing it.

It's a factor of time, spending 6 hours in the truck on the highway for a short amount of time wheeling, well sucks.

I have spent over 24 hours of drive time just to wheel. On the normal drive it is 8 hours total for just one day of wheeling. WORTH IT.

    Do what ya' want.

Drive as far as ya' want.

Did 7 hrs to, and 7 hrs back on a recent trip.

    Stay a weekend.

I've driven 800 miles one way to Moab, to stay in sub 10*F temps and wheel Thursday through Saturday and drive 800 home on Sunday.
I've driven 500 miles one way to the Rubicon to wheel for Tuesday through Friday and drive home Saturday.
Conversely, I've driven 150 miles to the Hammers to wheel a 4 hour trail and turn around and drive home.

I guess its all about the dedication and just how badly you want to wheel.

If you don't want to wheel, I don't think anyone here is gonna hate on you for "building" your truck. It's your money.

Better to have a bad ass mall crawler and not need it, than needing a bad ass mall crawler and having a Prius.

WOOT! Mall crawlers ROCK! Lol. Or you could take my route...take the stock truck wheeling, get stuck repeatedly, break everything possible, then cry about it as you drown your sorrows with a case of Guinness later on. Just my preferred technique. I mean, seriously, who even wants non-dented body panels?!?
