I'm part of a 18000 acre free-roam lease in the Sacramnto Valley, and my buddy has some awesome property there as well, but for weekday hunts it's just too far a drive with school and work back at home. So at least I can get away from the public lands whenever I need to.

I like seeing new hunters in the field, but new hunters without a ethical leader who can put the right morals in them leads to "killers" not hunters. It is what it is, maybe if I see them out there next time I'll walk over and try to give them some helpful tips.

Yeah lack of the respect of the sport is hard to get out of someone. But there isn't much you can do... Other then find a road kill skunk and squirt the glands in their blind. I guarantee they won't be hunting it the next weekend.

Another note, I decided to pick up some Dakota Decoy mallards today. Expensive decoys but I think it'll be worth it. I have some snows from DD so I know they'll impress the human eye.

we use GHG full body spec decoys and our duck decoys consist of GHG, hotbuys (shitty) and some flambeau...they make a pretty nice spread my favorite is the GHG because the quality but the flambeau are a little less expensive so thats what we mostly have. and 2 mojo mallards one drake and one hen

I have a dozen of the hotbuys...Just because it's my first season and I am on a tight budget with college. They have lost some paint on the heads but overall they are okay for my first decoys. Plus they were only 29 bucks.

Damn sounds like you're set with decoys. Those mojos are sweet

Got some colder weather gear today! Heading out tomorrow. High of 30.

good luck with the season man and yea we have been collecting decoys for years now and we buy a few here and there so that why we are set but the hot buys are really nice, they just fade so easily....we leave our decoys out all season and the sun just fades the paint badly

but if you are hunting public land where you have to pic up your decoys after every hunt im sure they will last longer because they really are a good looking decoy and for that price they are amazing.

we dont worry about them fading too much because if they are close enough to see that they are faded then they are close enough to shoot:D

    1) hate sky busters like a mother*&%#^!!!
    2) 707tothe907 ill get some pics tomorrow moring when i go out, i keep on forgetting sorry man. i shot a couple blue bill and a bufflehead the other morning.
    IMAG0544_4940d6ca3240e56f38946cb7f69642ee5ef80fff.jpg
3)i put a hole in the back of my boat the other day but good thing im a helicopter mech. i just fab'd up a little metal patch. then riveted it in place a sealed it up good. also changed the oil too, she is running good now.
    4) i use a duck commander aniversery edition for my duck call, its pretty easy to do a feeder call when its to frozen ahhaha that tends to happen some mornings here. and i use GHG lifesize decoys. work ok here but ive notice that i have to pretty much put them on top of each other cause the birds up here def like to group tight.
    5) the one good thing about kodiak (minus the minimal amount of waterfowl) compaired to other places i have hunted before) is fact that there arent very man hunters here an lots of area to hunt.
im not used to being able to hunt where ever i want like i can here. back home in cali i usually hunt the federal land by the salton sea or my uncles private duck club down the road from the federal land.
and now my father in-law will be buying land up in michigan next to my wifes uncles 500 acres of prime duck hunting land!!! def pumped about that concidering he is pretty much buying for me and thats the TRUEFF, TRUEFF.

Today I had a great hunt! Started the day with 38* temperatures... headed out for pheasant at 8am sharp. The club planted 200 birds for us, so we managed to grab our limit pretty quick, within about 45 minutes. It was my 1 year old black labs first hunt, the hunt she's been training for for months. My 9 year old yellow lab showed her the ropes and they managed to scare up quite a few birds for us, I was more than impressed.

Afterwards I dropped the 9 year old Sundance off, and headed to where my buddies were duck hunting on some private property right next to a refuge. Cassidy, my 1 year old lab, has always hated water, but after about 20 minutes of begging, and then finally dragging her into the foot deep water, she followed me out to the blind.

We managed to knock down a couple spoonies and blue bills, and even got lucky with a few pintail, GWT, and some gadwall came cruising through. We were 2 short of our combined 21 duck limit when a couple snows came cruising out of the refuge. A couple excited-like clucks on my specklebelly call and the snows did a 90 degree turn and headed straight for our blind. Was a high shot, but we managed to knock both down.

Ended the day with 21 ducks, and 3 snowgeese combined with the pheasant from the morning. But the ducks don't matter to me, it was just amazing being able to drop bird after bird to help Cassidy to get fetching.

Here's some pictures of her first duck, and her first goose!

60 deg with 30 mph winds this morning. The ducks got up and out of town. Temps dropping 20 to 30 degrees this afternoon - would be a great day to hunt tomorrow. The front will bring ducks for sure.

Awesome pictures!! Looks completely different from how I envisioned it. I wish you could knock down a couple of those emporers... They sure are pretty. I like your spot though, looks like a gorgeous area to hunt.... It kind of amazed me that birds fly to Kodiak. Bette luck next time, hopefully the snow stays away for a few more weeks for you Coby.

I was just outside. It's now 34 deg according to my phone, and it's misty. There was a group of geese flying by just now and they obviously couldn't see each other - they were calling like mad.

Tomorrow is going to be nuts for ducks here. I'm really considering calling in and then going to dry to draw a spot at the marsh.

I'm personally not a fan of wing - type movement such as wind ducks/mojo ducks. But I do have buddies that use them so I'll give you a little advice about the Air Lucky.

First off make sure you carry oil on you - if a wing starts sticking you can quickly oil it up and get back to hunting.

And second off, when you first use it you'll have a 50-50 chance of the wings not spinning very easily, they might bounce around unevenly and make a lot of noise due to vibrations. The reason for that is the white paint is thicker then then rest of the paint, and it throws off the balance of the wings. The easy fix to this is file down some from the white side of the decoy.

That said, hope it works for you - and I think it really will... Birds down here see that shit all day long and learn to avoid it, but Alaskan birds are gonna be all over that like white on rice.
