120k on my 6spd and the only occasional grinding I get is if I'm trying to downshift to 1st while I'm rolling. I also get an occasional 3rd gear grind if I'm being lazy and not pushing the clutch all the way in. My TOB still squeaks :( It has been squeaking since I bought the truck 3 years ago w/ 42k on it. Currently, I'm running Mobil 1 in the tranny, t-case, and diffs. It's time to change it so I think I'm going to give the redline stuff a try.

I will say that Toyota gets a D in my book for the 6spd.

    Edit:
Ordered some Redline MT90 for the tranny and 75W90 for the t-case and diffs last night off of Amazon. Should be here next week. I will let you guys know if I notice any difference.

    Too few to list.
I use to have the 6spd but it started making a noise and figured it was more trouble than it's worth so like the OP, i went auto though I also do have a 5 speed!

Thanks. I'll make the switch when it's time. For now, just the tranny

Made the switch to redline today. Put Mt90 in the tranny and 75w90 in the t-case and diffs. I can't say that I can really tell much of a difference in the shifting. Maybe I'll give it a few more days to work its way in. I've had Mobil1 75w90 in everything the last 70k miles.

I haven't tried the 4wd out yet though.

Back in my Import racing days we would always use redline shockproof in the tranny. Anyone tried it out in the tacoma 6spd yet? I wonder if it would make a difference.

Same thing happens to me! If I keep the clutch in and i shift to second then it will slip into first. Like you said it only happens like 1 in 100 times.

I have the same issue. Second gear, then first will always "fix" it.

Not sure if it's the same problem but if I can't get into first, it's always clutch out and back in and it's fine.

Or I just let the clutch out slowly until it slips into first

Probably would work on mine too. Trying second is just my first reflex after 15+ years of driving manual transmissions in various states of wear.:)

That has less to do with manufacturer of oil but more wit h the fact of using 4wd.
success to 4wd always workign is...
    1. Use 75-90 or lower if you can find oil. Synthetic if you can.
    2. Make sure when you fill diffs and transfer case, oil is at the fill hole level, while on the flat ground. You can be slightly above but don't be below.
    3. Exercise 4wd, lockers often for oil to coat all components. So when yu needed it will simply go on with out the problem. Best time to excersise 4wd is after long drive so oil is nice and warm and it will splash and coat everything on shifters.

Nothing yet but just getting started
I purchased my 2012 TRD Sport 6spd 4x4 about 3 weeks from Toyota Santa Cruz, and did not like the "clunk" sound when shifting between 1st and 2nd, so had the TRD sport-shift installed (for an additional $650). No more clunk, and very tight and clean gear changes in all 6 speeds--the truck now shifts amazingly well with no sounds/grinds whatsoever (as one would expect when purchasing a new truck). Too bad one has to "upgrade" the manuel transmission in order to get one that works smoothly--

Same thing in both my 1st gen and 2nd gen. I just let off the brake and roll an inch or two in either direction and it slips right in

I have seen the same on my 2012. However I also saw the same thing with my 1st gen 4Runner and my '95 Mazda pickup. While it is annoying it hasn't concerned me as I have seen it in other vehicles with manual transmissions.

This sounds like an inherently common failure point on these 6 speed manual tacoma's according some experts in the industry, namely this guy:

This was taken from this link directly, surprisingly it is the top two hits on the video:

4LO, 1st gear, dump the clutch and redline it. Then bring it in to the dealership and say "I dunno what happened, was pulling out of Macy's parking lot and it took a crap." Say hi to a new tranny within the week.

Just don't do it in the parking lot of the dealership. They might ask questions.

adding just in case anyone actually tries this, Toyota can read exactly what RPM's you've hit, what time it occurred and compare those to other captures including mph. Not sure if they're allowed to use this info for anything other than safety investigations, but it's there.

Yeah. Whoever tries that would get royally fucked for doing it and the sad part is that at the end of the day they only did it to themselves. Just so you know its called freeze frame data, and they use it QUITE often to aid them in their major warranty claims.
