Military intelligence

Anyone here work for military intelligence. It is one of the career paths I am considering and wondering if anyone can give me some more info.

 

Enlisted or DoD? I might be able to get you in touch with someone enlisted in the navy.

 

Wasn't intel but my buddy was an he loved it. He now works for the DOD at the pentagon. it's really a good transfer MOS, whether you become a lifer or just serve a couple enlistments the DOD or many other TS companies are always needing people. Very good choice.

 

Well, here is the deal, I went in and talked to the recruiter today. I told him I am studying mechanical and nuclear engineering, but really want a position where I can use my arabic. We talked about various roles in the army, that I would directly apply my language skills. He told me about one role I didn't like, and then told me about MI. Honestly I would rather be on the front lines either fighting or gathering intelligence but it looks like my best option is more of a support role.

he suggest I enlist as a reserve, take a semester off of school to complete basic and AIT (correct acronym)? then resume school If I wish.

I am also considering the Navy's Nuclear Propolsion officer candidate program, but again, I would like something more involved with arabic

 

Oh also my ultimate career goal is to be in intelligence hopefully with one of the 3-letter agencies

 

Navy Cryptographers Technicians

They have different branches in the CT field. CTI=Interpreters. Arabic language experience would be greatly needed.

 

Thanks monkey: Here is my other question. I have been studying arabic the last few semesters and love it. I was wondering would it be better to continue studying until I'm fluent (I would have to do this on my own since virginia tech does not offer upper level classes), or just learn it in AIT?

 

The CTIs go through intense language classes. However, it's more intended to give you a basic understanding of what's being said as there are many local dialogs in Arabic. If you already have arabic experience, I would think it would be fairly easy for you.

 

As far as Army goes, any 35 series will allow you to use your Arabic skills. If you want to do something "frontline" consider 35M Human Intelligence Collector. They are out in sector everyday. It really depends on what you want to do, exactly. If you want to work for a an alphabet soup agency, 35F Intelligence Analyst, or 35L Counterintelligence Agent is a good way to go, but you can no longer enlist straight into the 35L field.

I say stay in school and get that degree and then go in as an officer. Do they still have warrant officers in the Army? Learn as you go.

Remember, Air Force guys always get the air conditioned rooms

 

The Army does have Warrant Officers. Warrant is a great alternative to Commissioned Officer, as you are a specialist and not a command position.

Intel guys get the air conditioned rooms too, to keep the computers cool

 

Yes we still have Warrant Officers. I recruit qualfied NCO's to become WO. For MI he will need to be at least a SGT and have at least 4 years of expierence

My recomendation for the young man is to stay in school and enroll in ROTC. Once finished he can apply fo a Commission as an MI Officer.

While in ROTC you might want to consider SMP. SMP is a program where you drill with the Army Reserve and get SGT (E-5) pay.

They never gave me an A/C room for my computer. Then again mine was a Inmarsat laptop with a built in collapsable dish. Hit the ground, open the case, deploy the dish, and find the bird in the sky. Point out the bad guys via wwmccs and watch them get smoked from above. I wish they would take me back in again. I enjoyed my work to much. Im way to old now to go back again.

 

I say do it! I just enlisted in the Army National Guard, HUMINT, Human collector pretty much. I am considering Intel as well, or UAV's. My father is a CSM in the Army NG, and he is a Intelligence Analyst. He makes bank! E-9. It wouldn't hurt either to go to Officer's school, you would just make more money.

 

Not to mention if you stay 20 yrs the retirement pay package is way better for officers than enlisted. I stayed enlisted and wish I had become an officer after I had completed my degree.
