Stick with ice for tonight. Then, when she wakes up tomorrow she can start heating instead of the ice. You're trying to constrict vessels that deliver blood the first 24hrs and then open them after. The idea is to slow the delivery of inflammation the first 24hrs when the body is trying to address the initial injury and then expedite the removal once it's starting to heal things. When you heat you want a heating pad on a low setting (doesn't need to be super hot) and then 30min on and 30min off intervals. Same as ice.

Haha what ever you say I didn't work in the busiest ER in the state for 5 years or anything. ;) of all the sports injuries I have had and still getting (fucking hockey got rough friday jacked my knee up again) ice works much better than heat for me. If its a scar tissue problem then for sure heat and ice. But I agree with your alternating heat and ice. But I never take Ice out of the equation. If its a sprain it needs movement not to be locked out straight. The faster you work up sprains and strains the less you will be out and the less likely to re injury again.

Naproxen is not bad but it's a long term regimented ibuprofen. Used for people who will be taking it for a long period of time usually a loading dose at first followed by smaller long term doses.
Usually the prescribe version is naprosyn given to people with arthritis.

She also has that for migraines so they said to stay with that or ibuprofen. I think shes going to ibuprofen instead.

It's not bad like I said its just used for long term use. If I wanted fast acting I would use the OTC Motrin it's cheaper.

I suggested heat assuming it had been over 24hrs already. Rule of thumb is ice first 24hrs and then heat after that. 30min on followed by 30min off. I wouldn't alternate heat and ice.

I would alternate for sure. I would not tell him to do anything that I never put into my discharge instructions for patients. Like I said I personally only heat scar tissue injuries.

Ha, awesome, he's just a dude out of New Zealand.

Dcpsychobilly - Yikes man, I ski and used to race, tore MCL's and miniscus' (thankfully never more than a partially torn ACL), NEVER had my knee swell up that bad. Serious sprain maybe since I've never seen the swelling related to a sprain? General Dr.'s and knee injuries leave a lot to be desired, I had a close friend in college get diagnosed with a torn ACL only to find out a few weeks later with the MRI that wasn't the case.

Also, flying with a knee injury is HORRIBLE, make sure she keeps movement going while on a plane. I made the mistake of flying back from NY to CO with a torn MCL/miniscus, totally forgot about movement and fell asleep. Literally was the last person off the plane because my knee would not get going. Embarrassing...

I prefer Devs/OB medical advice over someone else here, FWIW. They both have medical experience...I'd trust my life with them if it means anything.

Fixed. Though TW does have some helpful advice on how to get tranny fluid out of your radiator, can tell you how to deworm yourself, give you advice on your GF being pissed about your porn library, and occasionally there's a thing or two on here about trucks. God damn the green room is entertaining!
