Linksys' home stuff is junk these days. They used to be amazing I spoke with some people and did a little research, the old purple routers, aka the WRT54GL is the best damn router ever made, period. It was a cooperative effort between a couple companies... I forget the names right now.

I've shit canned two 'newer' Linksys routers in the past year. I'm about to shit can this AE1000 USB wireless adapter I have, it keeps 'dying' after reboot and I have to reset the connection everytime.

Netgear was never that much better, I've shitcanned alot of those in the past, but have no experience with their newer stuff.

I've taken two WRT54's and flashed them with Tomato firmware (free online and easy to do) and they've been the most reliable routers I have ever seen. NEVER drops a connection, EVER. Its never slow, and if your signal is weak you can easily boost your power. Brings new meaning to the term "they don't make em like they used to"

Jim, have you evaluated what channels you are running your router on? 802.11 is 2.4GHz spectrum, and EVERYTHING runs on 2.4Ghz.... it takes nothing to cause interference. If you don't believe me, go stand with your laptop or kindle in the kitchen and turn the microwave on. Your internet will die, guaranteed. There is an app on the Google Market called "Wifi Analyzer", download it and scan your signals. I believe there is something similar on the Iphone market as well. The idea is to get away from interference. 90% of users don't care about this, so you'll find channel 6 usually spammed by routers, creating issues. Another thing to consider is if your device has bluetooth. Bluetooth also runs on 2.4ghz and usually is affected by WiFi, but not to say it couldn't be the other way around.

edit: Just had to add, get a WRT54GL for 20 bucks on CL and flash it for free, save alot of time and money, and best of all peace of mind. Don't risk your money on a new Linksys.

Only devices I'm having trouble with are my wife's old laptop (wireless-g) and her kindle fire which just started acting up 2 months ago. Prior to that, everything was good. Everything else in the house is wireless-n. Really, the kindle is the only problem. It won't connect at all with the password anymore, and if I open up the router it can connect for a moment then keeps adding/dropping it. The WRT54GL is probably only capable of running wireless-g, correct? That wouldn't help me if that's the case.

As far as interference, bluetooth isn't an issue. And the microwave hardly ever runs. That leaves the wireless phones (which are running in the same Gigahertz range). Still, it doesn't explain things having problems just in the last 2 months for one device mostly when nothing has changed. Oh, and I tried picking less used channels (based on online research) to no avail. Thought it was the kindle having a problem and got a different one under warranty with the exact same issue which is why I took it to work to test it out here.

Sounds like a password or authentication issue to me. Maybe its assuming the wrong encryption protocol, I've seen that on Android phones. You have to somehow 'forget' the information and reset the system. Its tricky. Honestly doesn't sound like the router to me.

On a side note, guys, would you be willing to help me out? Trying to get some votes and try and get a Rigid Light Bar! You can vote once a day with your FB and you don't need to input any information, just check the box next to mine. Thanks!

*breather relocator* :D But seriously, not sure when I'm gonna find the time...maybe next Sunday will work best. I also have a transmission oil seal to replace sometime before winter break...:(

We're moving it up and out of the way of obstacles by making the rear axle IFS. Haven't you heard of this mod? I've seen a lot of posts about it.
