Pretty much any $300 HP or Dell will fit the bill just fine. Office supply stores like Staples usually have the best sales.

Haha, no. I bought a laptop last year. I'm shopping for my old man, he wants to get my mom a laptop for Christmas so I really REALLY hope there won't be any porn surfing... :puke:

You can also check out Costco. They generally have pretty good deals on name brand hardware. Places like Target are opening on Thursday at 9pm and they carry a few lower end machines too ;)

In the last 3 days we have had the following happen at our remote sites:

An IT dept at a remote hospital (not our staff, their colocation, our equipment)

-Moved a switch, without regard to where stuff was plugged in.

    different site

-Had the cooling unit fail and shutdown their servers, but left ours on and didn't notify us until 4 hours later, good thing our MSA was smart enough to shut itself down.

    Different site

-Local IT needed a power supply for a server, noticed we had 2 in ours (one hot spare) and decided to "borrow" it for a few days without telling us, naturally our snmp traps notified us that a power supply had been removed, so I called them out on it.

...Must be a full moon this week....

I'd be in prison awaiting manslaughter / murder trials if I had all this happen in my shop in one week, heh.

Shit like that happens everywhere, then when they do lock it down it means you can only do something with 35 different approvals while hopping on 1 leg.

On a brighter note, I just puchased the new Google Nexus 10 :D

IT professional here. I'm a Technical Engineer. Basically a data center operator with networking & helpdesk thrown in. ITIL certified.

Have you thought about a tablet instead of a laptop? Most tablets do everything a laptop will & have more processing power than low end laptops. If it has to be a laptop, I would avoid Walmart (Walmart doesn't give you the best deal on electronics & alot of their stuff is old technology). Like others said, Costco, & Tigerdirect are good places to look. Or blackfriday.com for upcoming deals. Best Buy ocassionally will shock me with good deals.
Look for a PC with windows 7 or 8. Avoid windows Vista.

How difficult was getting the ITIL certification? My work is wanting me to take it since I head our IT department.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
I've got a CCNP Security test, then Cloud Essentials, then I plan on doing ITIL as well since my folks have me doing more business development and project leadership. I think the biggest thing of the ITIL is the terminology. The AF required me to do a CBT of the ITILv2 and the processes/terminology were the only tough parts.

The best way of accomplishing this is throughLDAP. It is part of Polycom’s Productivity Suite, and has become a freefeature with recent updates to their software. There is a lot of goodinformation in this Technical Bulletin on how to set it up: http://supportdocs.polycom.com/PolycomService/support/global/documents/support/technical/products/voice/Corporate_Directory_Best_Practices_TB41137.pdf

Outside of using that, you canpush a directory to every phone in the 000000000000-directory.xml file that thephone requests from its provisioning server on boot-up. This is a onetime configuration step, meaning once the phone has downloaded this file once,it doesn’t request it again until the phone is reset. The result is thatthe directory on a phone is not updated as changes are made to that

file. Only the phoneswhich most recently downloaded the file will contain the new contact changes.
