We didn't need a passport when we took a cruise to Canada. I think cruises has different rules though.

Bottom line: Since June 2009, everyone from every country arriving in Canada by air, land and sea has needed a passport or equivalent travel document. (Some exceptions apply to children's passport requirements). Besides an up-to-date passport, visitors may instead have an equivalent travel document, such as a NEXUS Card.

getting in to Canada is harder than it is coming back to the US from Canada. Me and a few buddies tried to cross from Blaine Washington in to Canada all we had were our CA license, that got us a nice wave in to the secondary inspection where they totally tore apart my friends car, they didn't find crap but wasted about an hour of our time.

Then the fun part was getting turned back around and waiting in the US customs office for a few more hours being interrogated, and having the car searched again..

If you are thinking of going without a passport, think again. Unless you like being harassed and don't mind having a few hours of your life thrown away.

I went in May WITHOUT apassport, however, I'm a Canadian citizen living in the states and possessing a "green card". With my green card, I can travel anywhere in the western hemisphere and return to the states. Amazing, isn't it ? A NON-citizen can travel around without any passport, coming into and going out of the U.S., but a U.S. citizen needs a passport !

    I wouldn't call it amazing
    Technically speaking...
    Passport = proof of citizenship
Green card = proof of citizenship

OP you will also need a clean record to get into Canistukia...

Even if you get a passport it doesn't mean they will let you in. Check your record and make sure your clean. One of my buddy's got delayed, searched, and had to spend about $300 to get in because he told customs he had 2 DUI's from the 90's. When they ran his name he came up clean because they had been expunged and that caused a nightmare cause they thought he was lying.

My other friend thought he had a clean record and told customs he was clean. Turns out a "battery" charge that was supposed to be expunged was not and it was still on his record. They thought he was lying and again...more waiting and money to get in.

I got through with no issues cause I'm a good boy :)

I don't know about CA, but here in NY you can get an enhanced drivers license instead of a passport for traveling to Canada.

There are only 4 states that currently offer the EDL; Michigan, Vermont, New York and Washington

Well, that sucks. I used to travel to and from of Canada fairly routinely (by ferry between Port Angeles and Victoria or Seattle and Vancouver), with nothing more than a drivers license or similar identification required.

Not a big deal for me at the moment. I have both regular (blue) and government (red) passports, and don't really plan to travel to Canada in the near future anyway. Will have to remember it for the future though.

Up until last October, I had been out of the country for roughly seven years, thus didn't see the commercials shown here.

I don't think they'll let you into Canada with a DUI on your record. It's a felony up there I believe. I could be wrong, I thought I remember that from college though.

So you're saying I don't need a passport to get into Canada?
