I had an 01 Xterra, I agree about the skid plate but disagree with most of the rest (esp the oil filter). I had the X for 11 years and 140K miles, the last several years it was mainly used in the winter and rust did it in. Mechanically, other than the window regulators and exhaust manifold (both known issues going in) it never had a problem. Even at the end it drove tight but it was going to start requiring money.

In just about every way the Tacoma is better but the Xterra was designed as a minimalist truck. I believe their slogan was even "Everything you need, nothing you don't." So it wouldnt be hard to beat them in most categories.

Don't get me wrong...The X was a great vehicle. I had the 2005 OR with the 4.0 and a 6 speed (different than the 01-04 models). The power band was amazing and I thought the interior is more practical than most SUVs. I just find it troubling that something as simple as changing out the oil is difficult to access. I over exagerated about removing the driveline, but this might as well be done if your arms are not abnormally elongated and can contort around bends and weird angles. Just my opionion from past experience, but regardless, the point is that the Tacoma seems to be an overall better built design if you break it down one for one.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I test drove the Nissan Frontier Pro-4x a couple months ago when I was shopping. As you can see, I bought the Tacoma.

i haven't read all 8 pages of posts. But i almost bought a Pro4x too. Thought it was a great truck and they gave me a great price on it. My main problem with it was the back seat. There is NO room back there. I'm only 6ft tall and I seriously can't fit back there. Check one out sometime for fun if ya get a chance and you'll see what i mean. Tacoma looks better too.. threre, I said it

    edit:
i just read bullaculla's post on the back seat which they mention there seems to be more room. instead of an opinion thing, maybe someone could take 5 minutes and bring up the rear seat leg room on both trucks (i'm lazy and at work on my saturday). but i really thought the Frontier's back seat was horrible. maybe its the seat angle or something.

Ive got both trucks, a 2011 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x, and a 2012 TRD, both in DC/Crew cab.

The Frontier has more space definitely, and fits a car seat in the rear better comfortably, atleast for me, Im 5'10". Both great trucks, but honestly the Frontier is better I think simply because I paid less for it. I do enjoy the backup camera in the Tacoma though, other than that, they are both about equal in every regard, I just enjoy driving our Frontier more because the power and better seat positioning.

As someone who has had both this year. I prefer the Tacoma's ride, turning radius, and the fact it is a more comfortable truck for me. Certainly don't miss waiting on the FSU, radiator/tranny cross contamination, or that annoying driver side window rattle.

The Craptier sure didn't turn heads like the Tacoma does.

    Craptier=Frontier

Edit: I'm not referring to the frontier as a piece of crap. Just pointing in the statement someone thought Craptier meant Ford Raptor. I almost bough a frontier pro 4x.

I looked at the Frontiers but I'm sorry they are ugly, not completely ugly but ugly. To describe it best I would describe the Frontier as a "ButHer Face"...All Good But Her Face ;)

Anyways Tacoma FTMFW!!!! I love my Taco

being a Taco newbie I considered the Nissan but sincerely is far behind from the Taco... things i quickly noticed...

rear door, the Nissan has a smaller rear door and the window is splitted...

cabin, thus the Nissan double cabin looks smaller...

ground clearance, the Nissan looks low and squated... everyone here is trying to lift i can only imagine with a Nissan :/

    width, the Nissan looks narrower...

interior, the Taco has a more livable interior...

bead, at first sight the Taco bead looks larger and better finished...

this is not a scientific comparo just stuff i noticed at frst sight

I've owned both.... not much difference when you get them off road. The Pro4x "feels' much stronger.... not bad either way.. I have a Taco TRD off road.. if I had to trade back to the Nissan, I would be ok... It wasn't bad on trade in either... I was even in just a few months and thats after it was wrecked... see my first post for details

Actually, I recently purchased my 2013 Taco and dumped my 06' Titan. The Titan had tons of power, but that was about the only redeeming quality that it had. When I purchased the Titan it had 55k miles, and I then drove it for 65k miles in 3.5 years. During the time of ownership I've had to replace numerous sensors, had some electrical wiring issues, issues with the airbag, replaced the rear axle seals & bearing twice, wore a whole in the the driver's side seat, and the gas mileage was less than stellar (14-15 mpg)

After replacing the axle seal/bearing for the second time I figured with only 120k miles on it I was having WAY too many issues with the vehicle. Hell, my 97' Ford Ranger with 200k miles didn't have a fraction of the problems that my Nissan had. That will be the last Nissan that I ever own.

    Moral of the story: Toyota>Nissan

My parents have a 2008 Nissan for their towing rig and they gave me the keys while I was home for Christmas. I thought a full-size truck would be a pita in town but after a couple hours I was fine. I would trade my Taco for that Titan any day of the week. The ride is a lot smoother, the all black interior is really nice, good power, nicer seats, nicer interior in general, etc.. After college I think I might sell the Taco for a Titan.

The results of this poll is not surprising.
But I bet it would have similar results even on the frontier forums:rofl:
    J/K...
I probably would've kept my Pro4x if it was a 4x4. I really liked the leather interior and seating position. Plus it had power.
Tacomas just look better to me and has a much higher resale. I lost a lot of money trading in the nissan for the Tacoma. I think I have only seen two lifted Frontiers here on Oahu, compared to the countless lifted Tacomas.

The only place the Nissan wins is price. I priced one this weekend and could not believe how much less they are. Of course with the Toyota you get a little back on MPGs and a whole lot on resale. I think I will stick with the Tacoma. Now if we were talking full size I would have to go with Chevy. The Tundras are nice but the front sits too low. Plus right now they are dumping Chevys.

I dont understand the more room in the rear, the back seat is almost straight vertical and when I sat in the back seat of my neighbors Frontier my knee was hitting the backseat, maybe its just me
Also there no denying that the Tacoma is wider side to side and longer but the Frontier is taller from bottom of floor to top of ceiling
